Bharat Jodo Yatra continues in Agar Malwa district of MP on its 11th day in state

Agar Malwa (MP), Dec 3 (PTI) The Bharat Jodo Yatra led by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi resumed in Agar Malwa district of Madhya Pradesh on the 11th day of its passage through the state on Saturday.

After a night halt, the foot march began from the bus stop in Mahudiya village in Agar Malwa around 6 am.

This is the 87th day of the yatra since it started from Kanyakumari in Tamil Nadu on September 7.

Voting begins for 1st phase of Gujarat Assembly polls; 89 seats up for grabs, 788 candidates in fray

Ahmedabad, Dec 1 (PTI) Polling began at 8 am on Thursday for the first phase of Gujarat Assembly elections in 89 out of the total 182 seats across 19 districts of Saurashtra-Kutch region and southern parts of the state to decide the fate of 788 candidates.

The voting is being held across 14,382 polling stations, of which 3,311 are in the urban and 11,071 in rural areas, the office of the state Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) said.

Live webcasting is being done from 13,065 polling stations to keep a close eye on the process, it said.

From power-packed rallies and roadshows by top leaders of the ruling BJP and other political parties to freebies promises and allegations and counter-allegations on each other, the high-octane campaigning for the first phase of the Gujarat Assembly elections ended on Tuesday.

Voting for 89 seats spread across 19 districts of Kutch, Saurashtra, and South Gujarat will be held on Thursday. The campaigning ended at 5 pm on Tuesday ahead of the first phase of polling.

“Campaigning for first phase Gujarat assembly elections has ended. All arrangements have been made for election and training has been provided to polling staff,” Gujarat Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) P Bharathi told ANI.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah held rallies and roadshows in the state as the BJP seeks a record seventh term in office.

BJP chief JP Nadda, Chief Ministers of Uttar Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Assam, Goa, Union Ministers Smriti Irani, Mansukh Mandaviya, Parshottam Rupala, Ravishankar Prasad, Piyush Goyal, Nitin Gadkari also campaigned during the first phase of elections.

BJP Yuva Morcha president Tejasvi Surya and leaders Manoj Tiwari and Ravi Kishan also held rallies to garner support for the party candidates.

Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge and Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot were among the prominent campaigners of the party. Party leader Rahul Gandhi addressed two rallies in the state.

Delhi Chief Minister and AAP convenor Arvind Kejriwal and Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann campaigned extensively in the state while making various promises.

A total of 788 candidates are in the fray on 89 first-phase seats which include 718 male candidates and 70 female candidates.

Candidates from both BJP and Congress will be contesting on all 89 seats in the first phase, while AAP will contest on 88 seats. A total of 39 political parties have fielded their candidates.

Among prominent candidates, Gujarat Chief Minster Bhupendra Patel is contesting from Ghatlodia, AAP Chief Ministerial candidate Isudan Gadhvi from Khambhaliya, former Congress leader and BJP candidate Hardik Patel from Viramgam, former Congress leader and now BJP candidate Alpesh Thakor from Gandhinagar South.

AAP state president Gopal Italia is contesting from Katargam constituency, Gujarat Home Minister (State) Harsh Sanghavi from Majura, Rivaba Jadeja from Jamnagar North, former Gujarat minister Parshottam Solanki from Bhavnagar Rural, Kunwarji Bavaliya from Jasdan, Kantilal Amrutiya from Morbi and Jayesh Radadiya from Jetpur.

Former BJP MLA Madhu Shrivastav is contesting as an Independent from Vaghodia.

A total of 2,39,76,670 voters, including 1,24,33,362 males, 1,1,5,42,811 females, and 497 from the third gender are eligible to vote in the first phase of Gujarat polls.

The second phase of voting will be held on December 5.

The counting of votes will be done on December 8. Results of the Himachal Pradesh assembly elections will also be declared on the same day.

Jammu, Nov 29 (PTI) Jammu and Kashmir BJP chief Ravinder Raina on Tuesday said Israeli director Nadav Lapid's remarks on 'The Kashmir Files' reflected his lack of knowledge about the ground situation in the Union Territory while filmmaker Ashok Pandit demanded a probe into his appointment.

Lapid, viewed as an anti-establishment filmmaker, had described 'The Kashmir Files' as a "propaganda movie" and "vulgar" at the closing ceremony of the 53rd International Film Festival of India (IFFI) on Monday. He was chairperson of the international competition jury.

"He (Lapid) should first visit the camps of displaced Kashmiri Pandits in Jammu and Kashmir. Such remarks are only expected from a person who does not know the ground situation and how people, irrespective of their religion, have suffered because of terrorism," Raina told reporters on the sidelines of an event here.

New Delhi, Nov 29 (PTI) With less than one week left for the high octane poll battle in Gujarat to end, the ruling BJP and new player AAP have intensified their online campaigning to reach out to the voters active on social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter.

At the same time, the Congress’ main social media handles have focused more on promoting Rahul Gandhi’s 'Bharat Jodo Yatra' than the party’s campaigning for the two-phase assembly elections on December 1 and 5. Counting of votes will be taken up on December 8.

An analysis of Facebook accounts and Twitter handles last week (Nov 21-27) of the three parties showed that Congress’ handles were more attentive to Rahul Gandhi’s 'Bharat Jodo Yatra', as 75 per cent of the total posts were on the yatra. Less than 20 per cent of the posts on its Facebook page and the Twitter handle were on the party’s campaigning in Gujarat elections.

Ramdev has sent an email to the effect to the Maharashtra State Commission for Women Chairperson Rupali Chakankar, in response to her missive of Friday demanding an explanation for his utterances within 72 hours.

Barely 72 hours after his comments on women sparked a furore, a chastened Yoga guru, Swami Ramdev has expressed regrets and apologised for his remarks.

Ramdev has sent an email to the effect to the Maharashtra State Commission for Women Chairperson Rupali Chakankar, in response to her missive of Friday demanding an explanation for his utterances within 72 hours.

Confirming the developments, the MSCW head informed that Ramdev has sent the response to her, expressing both regrets and tendering an apology, but also claiming that his remarks were allegedly twisted out of context.

“We have received his reply to our notice…However, if there are any more objections or complaints, we shall conduct a full-fledged probe and get the full video recording of the programme held last week,” warned Chakankar, while speaking with IANS.

Addressing a free Yoga training programme for women in Thane, Ramdev Baba blurted out without batting an eyelid before the gathering, largely comprising women: “Women look good in saris, they look great in salwar suits, and in my view, they look good even if they don’t wear anything.”

At that time Ramdev was flanked by Balasahebanchi Shiv Sena Thane MP Shrikant Shinde, the son of Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, and singer Amruta Fadnavis – wife of the Bharatiya Janata Party’s Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, and other prominent personalities.

The blatant statements spurred calls to “slap, kick and tonsure” Ramdev from various quarters in Maharashtra and other parts of India.

Agitated top leaders of various parties including Sanjay Raut, Dr. Manisha Kayande, Kishore Tiwari, Mahesh Tapase, women activists like Aparna Malikar, Trupti Desai, and others pounced on Ramdev, seeking an unconditional apology, booking him for degrading womenfolk and other demands, even as the MSCW slapped a notice.

Rana Kapoor, co-founder of Yes Bank, receives bail from the Delhi HC

New Delhi : Rana Kapoor, a co-founder of Yes Bank, was granted bail by the Delhi High Court on Friday in connection with a case involving the alleged laundering of $466.51 million.

The Enforcement Directorate reported the case (ED).

Justice Sudhir Kumar Jain granted Rana's request for bail. The order copy is awaited.

A trial court had previously approved bail for 15 of the co-accused, but not for Kapoor. The Special Judge had noted the severe and serious nature of the charges made against Kapoor.

The ED opposed the bail request in front of the trial court on the grounds that Kapoor was involved in the creation of criminal proceeds.

Rana, however, argued that since the charge sheet had already been submitted and he had not been detained by the agency during the inquiry, doing so would be useless.

The Special Judge had also noted that the 15 accused individuals were only hands when he rejected the bail petition. The claims made in the complaint appeared to have been carried out while acting or failing to act under the apparent direction of either Gautam Thapar or Rana Kapoor, acting as either their agents or employees.

An Enforcement Case Information Report (ECIR) was filed against Gautam Thapar, M/s. Avantha Realty Ltd., M/s. Oyster Buildwell Pvt. Ltd., and others, alleging criminal breach of trust, cheating, criminal conspiracy, and forgery for diversion and misappropriation of public funds from 2017 to 2019, resulting in losses to Yes Bank of Rs 466.51 crore.

Bhopal (Agencies): After a video of someone yelling "Pakistan Zindabad" during the Bharat Jodo Yatra (BJY) appeared on social media, the Congress and the BJP, which is currently in power in Madhya Pradesh, got into a furious argument.

On Friday, the BJY led by former Congress president Rahul Gandhi travelled through the Khargone district.

Khargone made headlines earlier this year after reports of communal unrest in April. Over 20 people were hurt during the disturbance, which resulted in one death. In relation to the incident, more than 200 people were taken into custody.

The film was deemed doctored by the Congress, which claimed that BJY's reputation had been damaged by its appearance on social media. The event also threatened "legal action."

On the other hand, the BJP insisted that the video clip had been posted on the Congress's official Twitter account.

In the footage, it was visible that hundreds of party officials and supporters were marching beside Rahul Gandhi, his sister Priyanka Gandhi, the Congress national secretary, and her husband Robert Vadra.

V.D. Sharma, the president of the BJP's chapter in Madhya Pradesh, said that the video clip came from the Congress' official Twitter account.

Sharma attacked the Congress, saying: "Khargone residents shouted "Pakistan Zindabad" during Rahul Gandhi's Bharat Jodo Yatra. The Congress's tendency to divide the nation was once more made clear. This is a "adventure to split India," as has repeatedly been demonstrated. Rahul Gandhi needs to apologise for his actions to the nation."

The march was seen in the video travelling through a congested area, and the police officers in charge of security management had a difficult time controlling the crowds of people seeking to see Rahul Gandhi.

The BJP was accused of conspiring with the Congress to malign Rahul Gandhi.

"A film that was altered by the BJP's dirty tricks unit is being circulated to attack the Bharat Jodo Yatra, which has been incredibly successful. We are starting the required legal action right away. We are ready for such tactics, and retaliation will be served "Jairam Ramesh, general secretary of the Congress and in charge of communications.

The guy should have been detained by the police right away, but why didn't that happen? Additionally, it revealed the level of security that Madhya Pradesh offered for Bharat Jodo Yatra and Rahul Gandhi."

Mumbai: Tributes paid to martyrs on 14th anniversary of 26/11 terror attacks

Mumbai, Nov 26 (PTI) Maharashtra Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari and Chief Minister Eknath Shinde on Saturday paid floral tributes to the martyrs who laid down their lives while fighting terrorists who had attacked the metropolis on this day 14 years ago.

They paid tributes at the martyrs' memorial in the premises of the Police Commissioner Office in south Mumbai, where Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, minister Deepak Kesarkar, Chief Secretary Manu Kumar Srivastava, state Director General of Police (DGP) Rajnish Seth, Mumbai Police Commissioner Vivek Phansalkar and other officials were present.

Family members of the policemen, who lost their lives during the November 2008 attacks, also paid tributes to the martyrs.

Bhagirath Palace market, in delhi fire burned more than 50 shops

New Delhi : According to fire officials, a large fire that started at the Bhagirath Palace market in old Delhi has been put out. They said that the cooling process was still in progress.

Atul Garg, director of the Delhi Fire Service (DFS), reported that a call about a store fire was received on Thursday at at 9.20 p.m.

"In the Bhagirath Palace Market, the shop number 1868, which is close to a Gurudwara, caught fire. 40 fire trucks have already gone to the scene, but no casualties have been reported "said he.

"A cooling operation is underway and the fire is under control. Currently, 22 firefighters are employed in cooling operations "Garg said.

As a result of the fire spreading to further stores, there are currently 50 stores involved in the conflagration, which emergency workers are attempting to contain.

According to the fire authority, the locality's narrow alleys made it difficult for the fire vehicles to get to the scene of the event.

SC seeks response of Centre on pleas seeking recognition of marriage involving gay couple

New Delhi, Nov 24 (PTI) The Supreme Court on Friday issued notice to the Centre and Attorney General R Venkataramani on two pleas by gay couples seeking a direction that their marriage be recognised under the special marriage law.

A bench comprising Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud and Justice Hima Kohli heard the brief submissions of senior advocate Mukul Rohatgi before issuing the notices on the pleas.

“Issue notice returnable in four weeks. Liberty to serve the central agency. Notice be also issued to the Attorney General for India,” the bench said.

Administration of Delhi’s historic Jama Masjid has banned the entry of women in the mosque.

New Delhi: Taking an unprecedented step, the administration of Delhi’s historic Jama Masjid has banned the entry of women in the mosque. The Jama Masjid administration has issued an order prohibiting the entry of solitary or group of girls in the mosque.

The Jama Masjid administration has placed sign boards outside the mosque that reads in Hindi, “Entering into the mosque for one girl or girls alone is prohibited”. The sign boards have been installed outside each of the mosque’s three entrances.

However, no restriction has been imposed on married couples or family entering the mosque. Another sign board reads, “The video making with the music is banned in the Jama Masjid”.

Taking a strict step against discrimination in the name of gender, Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) Chief Swati Maliwal said that this is a shameful decision and against the constitution.

“Today Shahi Imam has placed a board outside the historic Jama Masjid that the girls are not allowed to enter inside the mosque from now onwards. This is a shameful and against the constitution. What they think that this is Iran or Iraq? As much as a man has the right to worship, so also a woman.

Terming this as ‘Talibani’ behaviour, Maliwal said that a notice has been issued to the Shahi Imam of the Jama Masjid. “The decision to stop the entry of women in Jama Masjid is absolutely wrong. No one has the right to ban the entry of women like this. In any way, the ban will be removed,” the DCW Chief said.

Borgaon/Rustampur, Nov 24 (PTI) Congress general secretary in-charge of Uttar Pradesh Priyanka Gandhi Vadra along with her husband and son joined the Bharat Jodo Yatra led by her brother Rahul Gandhi in Madhya Pradesh on Thursday.

During the foot march in Rustampur village of Khandwa district, a 63-year-old woman suggested to Rahul Gandhi that if he wants the Congress to come to power in MP, where the Assembly polls are due next year, he should announce the waiver of farmers' loans.

On the second day of the yatra's Madhya Pradesh leg, Rahul Gandhi started the foot march from Borgaon in Khandwa district after sunrise. Bharatiya Janata Party's Delhi unit suspended 11 candidates for the upcoming MCD elections

New Delhi : On Monday, the Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP's) Delhi unit suspended 11 candidates for the upcoming MCD elections on December 4 for six years due to indiscipline.

On the advice of Adesh Gupta, the head of the BJP's Delhi chapter, the members were suspended.

The choice was made at a meeting at the BJP office in Delhi, which was presided over by BJP president J.P. Nadda.

Harsh Malhotra, the general secretary of the Delhi BJP, issued a notice of suspension outlining 11 candidates for the MCD elections.

"The strategies and programmes we have been following up to this point have been reviewed by J.P. Nadda. Additionally, a campaigning schedule for the upcoming MCD election would be set "added a BJP source.

Priyanka Gandhi to join 'Bharat Jodo Yatra' as it enters MP Wednesday

New Delhi, Nov 22 (PTI) Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra will join the Bharat Jodo Yatra on Wednesday when it enters Madhya Pradesh, senior party leader Jairam Ramesh said.

This is the first time that Priyanka Gandhi, general secretary in-charge of Uttar Pradesh, will be joining the yatra.

In a tweet, Ramesh said Tuesday was a rest day for the Yatra which will resume on Wednesday when it will enter Madhya Pradesh near Burhanpur.

Shraddha murder case: Aftab to be taken for medical check-up, Narco test likely today

Delhi Police will on Monday take Aftab Ameen Poonawalla, accused of murdering his live-in partner and chopping her body into 25 pieces, to hospital for some crucial pre-tests ahead of the Narco test.

As Aftab’s five-day police custody ends on Tuesday, the Delhi Police is racing against time to get the tests conducted at Dr B.R. Ambedkar hospital in Rohini.

According to sources, police have officially contacted Rohini FSL to get his narco test done but it’s not yet confirmed whether it will be conducted on Monday.

Meanwhile, investigators have come across several drug peddlers’ contact numbers while scanning Aftab’s phone.

“It is suspected that he smoked weed and charas. He had contacts of Mumbai and Delhi-based drug dealers in his phone which are being probed,” said the sources.

Further, police teams have been sent to Tosh in Himachal Pradesh after it was revealed that he, along with his live-in partner, had stayed there for quite a long time.

Aftab had strangled his live-in partner Shraddha Walkar on May 18 and then chopped her body into many pieces.

So far, the place of offence, the rented accommodation in Chattarpur, has been closely inspected by the crime team and experts from forensics, police said.

From the house, multiple exhibits have been seized.

“Following up on the disclosures by Aftab, various combing operations have been carried out at various places, including some forest areas, from where several bones have been seized,” said the official.

To ascertain whether the bones belong to Shraddha, the blood samples of her father and brother have been collected for DNA analysis.

The report of DNA tests will take 15 days.

Parliament’s Winter session to commence from Dec 7

The Winter Session of Parliament is set to commence from December 7 and will go on till December 29 this year, Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi announced on Friday. The upcoming Winter Session will have a total of 17 working days, he said.

The session will mark Vice President Jagdeep Dhankar debut as the chairman of the Rajya Sabha, as he will officiate proceedings in the Upper House. The session will begin at a time when Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh will still be gripped with election fever.

Taking to his official Twitter handle, Pralhad Joshi wrote, “Winter Session 2022 of Parliament will commence from 7 December & continue till 29th December having 17 sittings spread over 23 days. Amid Amrit Kaal looking forward to discussions on Legislative Business & other items during the session. Looking forward for constructive debate.”

Meanwhile, as for the working of he new session the government is planning to pass a number of bills during the forthcoming session of Parliament, the Opposition will demand a discussion on the on going matters.

On the first day of the session, the members are set to pay respects to sitting members who died.

According to sources, with the Covid numbers witnessing a massive decline and most members and staff of Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha Secretariat being completely vaccinated, this session is likely to go ahead without any major pandemic-induced restrictions. Over the last two years, Covid has affected Parliament sessions.

The Monsoon Session had started on July 18 and adjourned on August 8. The session saw 16 sessions spread over a period of 22 days.

Meanwhile, Congress MP Rahul Gandhi might not be able to attend the Parliament Winter Session as he will be busy with Bharat Jodo Yatra, said Jairam Ramesh.

Ranchi (AGENCY ): On Thursday, Hemant Soren was questioned for more than nine hours by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in the alleged Rs 1 billion illegal stone and sand mining case in the Sahibganj district in the state of Bihar.

Soren arrived at the regional office of the ED at approximately 11:50 a.m. Soren (47) exited the ED's office at 9:40 p.m. and drove home with his wife Kalpana, who had arrived at their residence around 9 p.m. JMM central general secretary and party spokesperson Supriyo Bhattacharya stated, "The CM has not been given a new date to appear before the ED." Earlier in the day, Soren had rejected the allegations and claimed he was being framed as part of a larger political conspiracy during a press briefing.

The Ranchi administration erected a three-tier security ring around the ED's airport road office at Hinno and deployed more than 200 policemen from the Rapid Action Force of the state police as thousands of JMM supporters gathered in the state capital to vent their ire against the federal government and its agencies.

Basant Soren, his brother and a lawmaker, accompanied Soren to the ED office. While Basant was not permitted to enter the office, Soren entered on his own. Basant stated shortly after Soren entered, "BJP is harassing the CM due to the JMM's rising popularity in the state. The CM will respond to all of ED's allegations."

After Soren's return, Congress state president Rajesh Thakur stated, "Everything is fine; the UPA MLAs will meet at the chief minister's residence on Friday."

Meanwhile, ED officials remained tight-lipped regarding the results of their interrogation.

According to sources, the investigators rejected Soren's claims that the amount of stone quarried and shipped from Sahibganj represented only 20% of the nearly nine crore metric tonnes of stone mined in Jharkhand over the past few years. Soren's interrogation kept the incumbent Mahagathbandhan government of JMM, Congress, and RJD on edge, as its ministers and legislators remained at the CM's residence and closely monitored the unfolding of events. Soren was questioned after ED agents arrested his constituency representative Pankaj Mishra in July and discovered the CM's signed cheques and passbooks in his possession.

The Enforcement Directorate asserted that Mishra controlled the illegal mining activities in Sahibganj and that Rs 42 crore in illicit proceeds were traced to him. Previously, Soren asserted that he was summoned immediately following the governor's atomic bomb joke and hinted at a larger plot to frame him. He stated that the Enforcement Directorate was making sensational claims without verifying the facts, as it would take four times as many stones to illicitly amass Rs 1 trillion. Using data from the mining department, he provided a point-by-point refutation of the ED's accusations, arguing that it is impossible for Rs 1 trillion in illegal royalties to have been paid. Soren was ridiculed by Godda MP Nishikant Dubey and former CM Babulal Marandi. Ramdev has sent an email to the effect to the Maharashtra State Commission for Women Chairperson Rupali Chakankar, in response to her missive of Friday demanding an explanation for his utterances within 72 hours.

Barely 72 hours after his comments on women sparked a furore, a chastened Yoga guru, Swami Ramdev has expressed regrets and apologised for his remarks.

Ramdev has sent an email to the effect to the Maharashtra State Commission for Women Chairperson Rupali Chakankar, in response to her missive of Friday demanding an explanation for his utterances within 72 hours.

Confirming the developments, the MSCW head informed that Ramdev has sent the response to her, expressing both regrets and tendering an apology, but also claiming that his remarks were allegedly twisted out of context.

“We have received his reply to our notice…However, if there are any more objections or complaints, we shall conduct a full-fledged probe and get the full video recording of the programme held last week,” warned Chakankar, while speaking with IANS.

Addressing a free Yoga training programme for women in Thane, Ramdev Baba blurted out without batting an eyelid before the gathering, largely comprising women: “Women look good in saris, they look great in salwar suits, and in my view, they look good even if they don’t wear anything.”

At that time Ramdev was flanked by Balasahebanchi Shiv Sena Thane MP Shrikant Shinde, the son of Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, and singer Amruta Fadnavis – wife of the Bharatiya Janata Party’s Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, and other prominent personalities.

The blatant statements spurred calls to “slap, kick and tonsure” Ramdev from various quarters in Maharashtra and other parts of India.
