Low pressure area near South Andaman Sea, cyclonic Storm by Sunday

A low pressure area (LPA) that has formed over the South Andaman Sea and the adjoining southeast Bay of Bay Bengal is likely to intensify into a cyclonic storm by Sunday evening, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Saturday.

The LPA lies as a Well-Marked Low Pressure Area (WM LPA) as of Saturday morning.

The IMD said the associated cyclonic circulation extends upto mid Tropospheric levels.

“It is very likely to move northwestwards, intensify into a depression over southeast Bay of Bengal during the next 12 hours and further into a cyclonic storm over east-central Bay of Bengal by Sunday evening,” R.K. Jenamani, a senior IMD scientist, said.

It is very likely to continue to move northwestwards and reach west-central and the adjoining north-west Bay of Bengal off north Andhra Pradesh-Odisha coasts by May 10, he said, adding: “By this evening, we will know if it will cross the coast or not.”

While the Andaman and Nicobar Islands are experiencing thunderstorms and heavy rainfall since the last two days, under the influence of the WM LPA, scattered to fairly widespread light/moderate rainfall is very likely over Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura for the next five days with isolated thunderstorm/ lightning over Assam and Meghalaya till Sunday.

The IMD has also forecast squally wind speed reaching 40-50 kmph gusting to 60 kmph very likely to prevail over South Andaman Sea and the adjoining southeast Bay of Bengal and Andaman and Nicobar Islands for next three days and warned fishermen not to venture into waters that are likely to be rough to very rough.

From the perspective of better disaster management till Sunday, the Andaman and Nicobar Islands administration has been asked to completely suspend fishing and tourism activities and for communities, the warnings have asked people to avoid going to areas that face the water logging problems often.

Rahul Gandhi attacks govt over WHO Covid death numbers

New Delhi, May 6 (PTI) Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Friday attacked the government over a WHO report which claimed that there were 4.7 million Covid deaths in India, saying "science does not lie, Prime Minister Narendra Modi does".

Gandhi also demanded that the government should support the families that have lost loved ones by giving them the mandated Rs four lakh compensation.

In a tweet, he said, "47 lakh Indians died due to the Covid pandemic. NOT 4.8 lakh as claimed by the Govt. Science doesn't LIE. Modi does".

"Respect families who've lost loved ones. Support them with the mandated ?4 lakh compensation," the former Congress chief said.

The WHO on Thursday stated that 14.9 million (one million=10 lakhs) people were killed either by COVID-19 directly or due to the pandemic's impact on health systems and society.

According to the report, there were 4.7 million Covid deaths in India, which is 10 times the official figures and almost a third of Covid deaths globally.

India strongly objected to the use of mathematical models by the World Health Organization (WHO) for projecting excess mortality estimates linked to the coronavirus pandemic in view of the availability of authentic data, saying validity and robustness of the models used and methodology of data collection are questionable.

India records 3,545 new Covid cases, 27 deaths in a day

India reported 3,545 new Covid infections in a day taking the tally of cases reported so far to 4,30,94,938 while the number of active cases declined to 19,688, according to Union Health Ministry data updated on Friday.

The death toll has climbed to 5,24,002 with 27 more fatalities, the data updated at 8 am stated.

Active cases comprised 0.05 per cent of the total infections, while the national COVID-19 recovery rate was 98.74 per cent, the health ministry said.

According to it, the daily positivity rate was 0.76 per cent while the weekly positivity rate was recorded at 0.79 per cent.

India's active caseload decreased by 31 in a day.

The number of people who have recuperated from the disease increased to 4,25,51,248, while the case fatality rate was 1.22 per cent. The 27 new fatalities include 26 from Kerala and one from Tripura.

The cumulative Covid vaccine doses administered in the country so far has exceeded 189.81 crore.

India's COVID-19 tally had crossed the 20-lakh mark on August 7, 2020, 30 lakh on August 23, 40 lakh on September 5 and 50 lakh on September 16. It went past 60 lakh on September 28, 70 lakh on October 11, crossed 80 lakh on October 29, 90 lakh on November 20 and surpassed the one-crore mark on December 19.

The country crossed the grim milestone of two crore on May 4 last year and three crore on June 23.

"Our figures are being reconciled with the Indian Council of Medical Research," the ministry said on its website, adding that state-wise distribution of figures is subject to further verification and reconciliation.

Nagpur: 35 passengers escape unhurt after bus catches fire

Thirty five passengers of a bus had a narrow escape after the vehicle caught fire in Maharashtra's Nagpur city on Thursday, a fire official said.

The incident took place near the Reserve Bank square around 9.20 am when the bus, run by the city civic body, was going from Mor Bhawan to Khaparkheda area, Nagpur Municipal Corporation's chief fire officer Rajendra Uchake said.

The blaze started from the engine side, following which all the passengers quickly got down from the bus, he said.

Two fire tenders were rushed to the spot and the blaze was doused, he said.

"No casualty was reported," the official said.

Man's mentally challenged minor daughter on various occasions since 2017

MUMBAI :: A special POCSO court here in Maharashtra has sentenced a man and his son to 10 years' rigorous imprisonment for raping the man's mentally challenged minor daughter on various occasions since 2017.

Special POCSO judge Kavita D Shirbhate in her order on Monday also imposed a fine of Rs 5,000 each on the two accused, while pronouncing them guilty of various offences punishable under the Indian Penal Code and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.

Special Public Prosecutor Sanjay More told the court that the 52-year-old man and his son, aged 25, repeatedly raped the victim at their home in Bhiwandi town of Thane since 2017, when she was 15-year-old.

The girl later became pregnant and complained to her neighbours, who helped her lodge a complaint at Kongaon police station in Bhiwandi.

The two accused were subsequently arrested.

More said they had examined nine witnesses, including the victim, to prove the case against the accused.

The judge in her order said the prosecution had successfully proved all the charges against the accused duo beyond reasonable doubt, and the duo needed to be convicted and sentenced.

Sri Lanka is looking for investors that can bring in more than $2 billion into the central bank, Finance Minister Ali Sabry said.

Sabry said that the next few months will be difficult for Sri Lankans, reports Xinhua news agency.

“There is a need to attract investments in U.S. dollars into Sri Lanka’s central bank,” he said.

The Minister said that the government is talking with several countries to get funds as soon as possible.

“If that effort is successful and money comes to the central bank, it will help stop the depreciation and stabilise the rupee,” he said.

Amid the ongoing economic crisis, the Sri Lankan government decided last week to suspend repayment for all debts for an interim period till it has an orderly and consensual debt restructuring programme supported by the International Monetary Fund.

MUMBAI :The Mumbai police have added the charge of "use of criminal force to deter a public servant from discharge of duty" in the FIR registered against independent MP Navneet Rana and her husband MLA Ravi Rana, an official said on Sunday.

The city police have also registered an FIR against several Shiv Sena workers for protesting outside the residence of Ranas in Mumbai on Saturday, he said.

The police had on Saturday evening arrested the Ranas for allegedly "creating enmity between different groups", after the couple cancelled their plan to recite the Hanuman Chalisa outside Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray's private residence `Matoshree' here.

According to an official from Khar police station, the couple was shifted to Santacruz police lock-up in the night.

Earlier, Ranas were booked under Indian Penal Code (IPC) Section 153 (A) (promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion, race, place of birth, residence, language, and doing acts prejudicial to maintenance of harmony), and section 135 of the Mumbai Police Act (violation of prohibitory orders of police).

The police later also added IPC section 353 (assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty) in the FIR registered against Ranas, the official said.

Meanwhile, based on a written application submitted by Ranas, the Khar police also registered an FIR against Shiv Sena workers, under relevant Indian Penal Code (IPC) sections including rioting and unlawful assembly, for protesting outside the couple's residence here, the official said.

Navneet Rana, who is MP from Amravati in Maharashtra, and Ravi Rana, MLA from Badnera in Amravati district, had submitted a complaint at the Khar police station against Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray, Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut, and Sena leader and state Transport Minister Anil Parab, accusing them of instigating people to 'kill' the couple.

Earlier this month, Ravi Rana had demanded that Thackeray, who heads the Shiv Sena, recite the Hanuman Chalisa at his residence on Hanuman Jayanti, and announced that if the CM did not do so, he would go to 'Matoshree' and recite it.

On Friday, Ravi Rana had said he would visit Matoshree on Saturday. But, as his announcement drew a strong reaction from Shiv Sena cadres, on Saturday morning he announced that he and his wife were cancelling their plan so as not to create any law and order situation ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Mumbai on Sunday.

But, despite their backtracking, Sena cadres on Saturday laid a siege to the building in suburban Khar where the couple was staying, and said the Ranas would not be allowed to leave until they apologised for insulting Matoshree, their "temple".

The Sena workers had also tried to break through barricades and enter the building, but were stopped by police.

Odisha logs lowest ever single-day COVID-19 case with one contracting infection: Active cases drop below 100

The daily caseload of fresh COVID-19 cases in Odisha on Saturday was the lowest since the outbreak of the pandemic two years back, as only one sample tested positive, pushing the tally to 12,87,980 cases, the State’s Health and Family Welfare Department said.

This is one of the lowest single-day infections since the first Coronavirus case was reported in the State on 15 March, 2020.

Meanwhile, the death toll remained unchanged at 9,124 with no fresh fatality reported in the last 3 hours. In the current month, the State has reported only three deaths, the health department said.

The active cases have dropped below 100-mark and the State now has 85 active cases. As many as 15 districts have turned Coronavirus-free with no active case, said health officials.

The cumulative COVID-19 caseload rose to 12,87,980, including 12,78,718 recoveries as 17 patients recovered in the previous day.

The State’s recovery rate currently stands at 99.27% while active cases (110) account for 0.07% of total positive cases registered in the State.

The State’s share is 3.45% in the country’s confirmed virus caseload while the active cases are 0.01% of India’s total active cases. The number of cured patients accounts for 3.63% of the country’s total recovery. Odisha has so far reported 1.88% of the country’s Coronavirus deaths.

The State’s health authorities have so far administered 6,50,37,646 COVID-19 vaccine doses while 2,96,75,947 people out of 3.09 crore eligible adult population are fully vaccinated. A total of 10,36,730 have so far received booster or precaution dose so far. More than 95% of the eligible population has so far received both the doses of vaccine.

Mamata’s ‘bulldozer’ attack at Centre, gives ‘3T’ mantra for governance

Launching a potshot against Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-ruled Centre amid the bulldozer row, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday said her Trinamool government wants to unite people instead of bulldozing, adding that Bengal Global Business Summit will help create another 40 lakhs jobs in the state.

Mamata laid the mantra of 3Ts for her governance — “trust, technology and teamwork.” “We do not want to bulldoze. We do not want to divide the people, we want to unite the people. Unity is our main strength. Culturally you will be very sound if you are united. But, if you are divided, it will fall. I believe in trust, technology and teamwork,” said the Chief Minister at Bengal Global Business Summit on Thursday.

Chief Minister Banerjee said the sixth edition of the summit has received investment proposals worth Rs 3,42,375 crore leading to the creation of 40 lakh new jobs in the state.

She said as many as 4,300 delegates from 42 countries participated in the two-day summit and 138 MoUs have been signed.

Mamata’s remarks come just a day after the rolling of bulldozers in Delhi’s Jahangirpuri on Wednesday as a part of the anti-encroachment drive of BJP-ruled North Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC).

The drive that was halted by the Supreme Court was launched just days after violent clashes broke out in Delhi’s Jahangirpuri on April 16 between two communities during a Hanuman Jayanti procession that left nine people injured, including eight police personnel and a civilian.

Pertinent to mention here, authorities ran the bulldozer over about 45 houses and shops in Madhya Pradesh’s Khargone where several people including police personnel were injured when groups of people pelted stones at each other during a Ram Navami procession on April 10.

The ‘Bengal Global Business Summit’ started at Biswa Bangla Convention Centre in Kolkata on Wednesday.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday laid out an eight-pillar strategy for the development of the state and making it a global hub for business.

Addressing the Summit, the Chief Minister said, “We do not divide people on the basis of caste, creed and religion. We stay like family. Irrespective of one being from any part of the country, whenever one is in Bengal, he or she becomes part of our family and should be comfortable here.”

The Trinamool Congress (TMC) supremo emphasized infrastructure development and no-strike culture in order to instill an ‘ease of doing business’ ecosystem transforming West Bengal into a global hub for trade.

“West Bengal is the first state to organize a physical business summit since COVID pandemic struck. There are eight pillars on which our strategy lays. First is world-class infrastructure, second is education, third is social security for the unprivileged and the fourth is skill development,” said Banerjee.

She further said, “The fifth pillar is expanding capital infrastructure while the sixth is the ease of doing business, the seventh is digitalization and the eighth is no strike and no man-days loss.”

Industrialists from different countries attended the event. Gautam Adani, chairperson of Adani Group also graced the event.

Gautam Adani on Wednesday said the company’s investment in West Bengal would exceed Rs 10,000 crore over the next decade.

Tourism ministry starts Swadesh Darshan Awards

The Ministry of Tourism under its flagship scheme of ‘Swadesh Darshan’ has sanctioned 76 projects in 31 states, Union Territories of India for more than Rs 5500 crore.

In order to acknowledge the efforts undertaken by the State Governments, Union Territory Administrations and various implementation agencies, the Ministry of Tourism has constituted Swadesh Darshan Awards in different categories including ~ achievement of planned objectives, innovative approach, adoption of sustainability principles in planning, design and operations, efficient project monitoring, ability to attract private investments in peripheral development and efforts undertaken to ensure optimal operations and maintenance and others.

The Ministry of Tourism has asked the State Governments/ UT Administrations to submit their entries online. The Ministry of Tourism under its flagship scheme of ‘Swadesh Darshan’ has sanctioned 76 projects in 31 states, Union Territories of India for more than Rs 5500 crore. As part of this scheme, tourism-related infrastructure has been developed at more than 500 tourist destinations.
