Kolkata : Yesterday at 9 pm Bangladesh time, an online meeting was organized with prominent journalists of Kolkata on the plan of West Bengal SAARC Journalist Forum.

Kaushik Ghosh, a prominent journalist from Kolkata, moderated the online meeting. Howrah Press Club Senior Journalist Shuvendu Kumar Chatterjee presided over the online meeting. Md. Abdur Rahman, Secretary General of the Central Committee of SAARC Journalist Forum was present as the chief guest.

Also present in the online meeting were, Prashant Biswas, Balai Pramanik, Sameer Mondal, Abhijit Sarkar, Rajeev Mondal, Baijid Mondal, Mohammad Zeelan.

The SJF West Bengal State Committee will be formed in a short time by the journalists of Calcutta.

Within a short period of time, the journalists of Kolkata formed the SJF West Bengal State Committee and discussed various issues of human rights and contemporary journalists in online meetings.

Kathmandu : Demanding preserving of Mother Language journalism and Journalists First International Mother Language Journalists Conference held in Kathmandu has declared eight points Kathmandu (Thimi) Declaration. Journalists from South Asia region demand to declare birth anniversary of first mother language journalist of Nepal Dharmaditya Dharmacharya as an International Mother Language Journalism Day.

They call on governments and all stakeholders to take initiation to develop, preserve and promote mother language journalists and journalism globally. First International Mother Language Journalists Conference organised by National Forum For Newar Journalist in support with SAARC Journalist Forum and Federation of Nepalese Indigenous Journalists held in June first and second 2024 demanded it to all governments and stakeholders of respective countries.

President of NFNJ Nripendra Lal Shrestha, President of SAARC Journalist Forum Raju Lama from Nepal, General Secretary of SJF Md Abdur Rahman from Bangladesh, SJF India Chapter President Anirudha Sudhanshu, likewise Journalist leader of Bhutan and member of SAARC Journalist Forum Kenley Dema have signed the declaration and demanded all respective governments and stakeholders to take the declaration seriously to be implemented.

First International Mother Language Journalists Conference was inaugurated by Former President of Nepal Bidhya Devi Bhandari and closing session by DPM and Foreign Minister Narayankaji Shrestha. Conference has been concluded in the presence of more than 50 journalists from abroad and 100 journalists from Nepal.

Surendra Bhakta Shrestha President of organizing committee of conference told that declaration will be submitted to head of governments and stakeholders for its implementation.

Sunil Maharjan vice president of NFNJ said that this historical conference of mother language journalism is continuity of previous conferences and it will adopt the legacy of those conferences on mother language journalism held in 2018 and 2022.

International Report : The International Mother Language Journalist Conference-2024 will be held in Nepal's capital Kathmandu for two days on Saturday, June 1 and 2. Secretary General of SAARC Journalist Forum Md. Abdur Rahman and Bangladesh Supreme Court Advocate Sheikh Kamal will participate in the International Mother Language Journalist Conference from Bangladesh.

SAARC Journalists Forum and National Forum for Newar Journalists of Nepal are jointly organizing the International Mother Language Journalist Conference on 1st and 2nd June, 2024 in Kathmandu, the capital of Nepal.

The organizing committee is doing all the preparations for the conference seriously. More than 100 journalists from South Asia will participate in the conference and will discuss extensively the challenges, opportunities and prospects of mother tongue journalism.

Deputy Prime Minister Shrestha was invited as the chief guest at the closing ceremony of the International Mother Language Journalists' Conference and he accepted it. It should be noted that SAARC Journalist Forum has been organizing international conferences on various international issues in South Asian countries. New Delhi : The election atmosphere has started heating up with the start of the nomination process for all the seven Lok Sabha seats of the national capital Delhi yesterday. Voting on all these seats will be held on May 25 in the sixth phase of voting.

According to the Election Commission, the total number of voters in Delhi is one crore 52 lakh, 2 thousand 161. This time 2 lakh 34 thousand voters will be able to cast their vote for the first time. There will be 13 thousand 713 polling stations for voting. The largest Lok Sabha in the national capital. The biggest area is West Delhi and the smallest is Chandni Chowk.

BJP has been in control of all the seats in Delhi since the last two elections. However, despite all the efforts of BJP, Aam Aadmi Party has been getting a huge majority in the state assembly elections since the year 2012. Meanwhile, it has controlled the Delhi Municipal Corporation for years. BJP had to face defeat there also.

The special thing in this election is that BJP is contesting the elections on its own, whereas for the first time as a part of the Indian Alliance, AAP is contesting jointly on 4 seats and Congress on 3 seats. Due to this, there will be face to face elections on all the seats this time. Front contest is natural. However, small parties and independent candidates from Delhi also enter the fray on a large scale to register their presence.

This time, BJP has fielded all new faces except Manoj Tiwari, the outgoing MP from North Eastern parliamentary constituency. Where Shri Tiwari is facing fire brand student leader Kanhaiya Kumar of Congress. Both of them are from Bihar. Therefore, it is believed that there will be division of votes in this Purvanchal dominated area.

Similarly, from New Delhi, AAP's Somnath Bharti is against BJP's Bansuri Swaraj, Congress's Udit Raj is against BJP's Yogendra Chandolia from North-West, former Congress MP Jai Prakash Aggarwal is against BJP's Praveen Khandelwal from Chandni Chowk, BJP from South. Yesterday, on the first day of nomination on these seven Lok Sabha seats, 15 candidates filed nominations, in which BJP candidate from North Western Lok Sabha seat Yogendra Chandolia is the leader. Today being Tuesday, there is news of large scale nomination.

New Delhi : Amidst the gradually increasing election excitement, voting will be held tomorrow on 88 seats in 12 states and union territories in the second phase of the Lok Sabha elections.

In this phase, the fate of 1206 candidates including former Congress President Rahul Gandhi Wayanad, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla Kota, Union Minister Rajiv Chandrashekhar Thiruvananthapuram, actress Hema Malini Mathura and headline-grabbing Bahubali Pappu Yadav Purnia is to be decided. In the first phase, 19 Voting was held on 102 seats in April.

Election Commission sources said here today that complete arrangements have been made to conduct free and fair voting on these seats. Strict security arrangements have also been made. Special vigilance is being taken especially in those areas where there is a possibility of disturbances.

In this phase, Shri Gandhi's constituency Wayanad, Shri Birla Kota, actress Hema Mathura and Bahubali Pappu Yadav's constituency Purnia were in the news. New Delhi : Dr. Shashi Shekhar Prasad Singh, a prominent socialist and professor of Delhi University, has said that the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) will not be able to achieve the majority figure in this Lok Sabha election. Dr. Singh, who was active in the JP movement, made this claim during an interview after the end of voting on 102 seats in the first phase. He said that the huge decline in voting percentage has made it clear that people is no inclination towards elections. He said that this decline, especially in the Hindi belt, indicates that people are very unhappy with the functioning of the government.

Dr. Singh, son of a fierce freedom fighter from Bihar, said that anyway BJP and NDA have nothing in South India. They are nowhere in the North-East except Assam. In the central part i.e. Hindi heartland, they were effective in the years 2014 and 2019. But this time they have tough competition in these areas too. Then I am not able to understand from where they will get the majority figure of 272. This time the slogan of crossing 400 will remain just a slogan.

In response to a question, Dr. Singh said, what happened after the abolition of Article 370 in Kashmir? Now it has become a Union Territory. There is no Legislative Assembly there. The rights of the citizens have been limited. This is an example of prejudice against minorities. Post-majority politics is being done by targeting a particular class. Religion and politics are two different things, but by combining them, the neutral nature of the Constitution is being destroyed.

He said that the construction of Ram temple is no longer an issue. BJP wants to keep it alive under majority appeasement. Today's problem is rising inflation and unemployment. People are troubled by this. The economy has been ruined in this regime. Farmers are marginalized in this agricultural nation. They have been fighting for their rights for a year, but their views have been ignored.

New Delhi, April 11, 2024. The first phase of general elections in the country will be completed on April 19 with voting on 102 seats. That is, only a week is left for campaigning for this phase, but no issue has been raised yet. It has been found that there is no election noise. Most of the cities and villages are deserted and the voters are silent.

This is the situation in those areas where votes will be cast in the first phase. The surprising thing is that even in Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal and Odisha, which are famous for intense campaigning, noise and great hustle and bustle, as soon as the election bugle sounds, the campaign of this phase is breathless. Eighty year old Prof.R.N. Singh says that this situation is not good. He said that we have never seen a silent election in his life. Perhaps this is the first election. People are not able to participate openly. People are scared. There is a feeling of despair among them. This is a direct sign of a big change.

New Delhi : The court has allowed Arvind Kejriwal to meet his wife and two ministers - Atishi and Saurabh Bhardwaj - before he is shifted to Tihar Jail. Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal will spend the next two weeks in jail in the liquor policy case after his Enforcement Directorate custody ends today. The probe agency did not seek custody of the AAP leader, after which a local court this morning sent him to jail till April 15. The court has also allowed him to meet his wife Sunita Kejriwal and ministers Atishi and Saurabh Bhardwaj before he is shifted to the Tihar Jail.

Mr Kejriwal was arrested on March 21 in the alleged liquor policy scam after he skipped nine central agency summons, and has been running his government from the ED lock-up since then. In Delhi's Rouse Avenue court, where Mr Kejriwal was produced this morning before the expiry of his probe agency custody, the ED said he had been "uncooperative" and was giving evasive answers. He did not reveal the passwords of his digital devices, the ED told the court.

Mr Kejriwal is the third AAP leader after his former deputy Manish Sisodia and Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh to be arrested in the liquor policy case. He has dubbed his arrest a "political conspiracy".

He had also addressed the courtroom during his last hearing and asserted no court had proven him guilty. "The CBI has filed 31,000 pages (of chargesheets) and ED filed 25,000 pages. Even if you read them together... the question remains... why have I been arrested?" he had said. The excise policy was introduced to bring an overhaul to the liquor business in Delhi but was scrapped after Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena ordered a probe into the alleged irregularities in the policy. New Delhi : Leaders of the India Alliance today called on the people to oust the NDA government at the Center from power in this election. The leaders of the alliance made this call in the "Remove Dictator, Save Democracy" rally organized from the historic Ramlila Maidan here. This rally was addressed by many leaders including Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav, Sunita Kejriwal, wife of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, as he is jailed on corruption charges.

Opposition leaders alleged that the central government wants to suppress the voice of the opposition by misusing the investigating agencies. They said that the arrest of former Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal is part of this.

Bhubaneswar : Once again a triangular contest is going to take place in Odisha. The ruling Biju Janata Dal (BJD) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) could not form an alliance in the state and both the parties are now contesting the elections on their own. Congress is clapping separately.

There are 21 Lok Sabha seats and 147 assembly seats in Odisha and Lok Sabha and Assembly elections are scheduled to be held simultaneously in four phases on 13, 20, 25 May and 1 June.

In the elections held in 2014, Biju Janata Dal got about 43 percent votes. Apart from this, Congress got the support of 25.6 percent and BJP got the support of 18 percent voters. In the year 2019, the situation of BJP changed and it became the second largest party in the state after BJD. However, even after this Naveen Patnaik took oath as the CM of the state.

Odisha Chief Minister and Biju Janata Dal chief Naveen Patnaik released the first list of 9 candidates for the Lok Sabha and 72 for the state assembly, yesterday. Mr Patnaik himself will contest from Hinjili Assembly constituency.

BJD General Secretary Organization Pranab Prakash Das has been made the candidate from Sambalpur Lok Sabha seat, where he will face Union Minister and BJP candidate Dharmendra Pradhan. Odisha minister Sudam Marandi will contest from Mayurbhanj Lok Sabha seat, while former Indian hockey team captain Dilip Tirkey will face former Union minister and outgoing MP Jual Oram from Sundergarh Lok Sabha seat.

Other candidates for the BJD Lok Sabha seat include Lambodar Niyal - Kalahandi, Ansuman Mohanty - Kendrapara, Prajip Kumar Majhi - Navrangpur, Manmath Routray - Bhubaneswar, Kaushalya Hikaka - Koraput and Ranjita Sahu - Aska.

Mr Patnaik himself will contest from Hinjili Assembly constituency in Ganjam district. The 72 candidates announced for the Assembly include 13 new faces and 12 women candidates.

The BJP last Sunday announced the names of its candidates for 18 of the 21 Lok Sabha seats in Odisha, while dropping four sitting MPs from the list. The party has not yet announced candidates for Cuttack, Jajpur and Kandhamal Lok Sabha constituencies.

The party has fielded four women - Aparajita Sarangi - Bhubaneswar, Sangeeta Kumari Dev - Bolangir, Malvika Keshari Dev - Kalahandi and Anita Subhadarshini from Aska.

The sitting MPs who have not been given tickets by BJP this time include Suresh Pujari - Bargarh, Union Minister Bisheshwar Tudu - Mayurbhanj, Nitish Gang Deb - Sambalpur and Basant Panda - Kalahandi.

The party has nominated Pradeep Purohit in place of Mr Pujari, while Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan has replaced Nitish Gang Deb in Sambalpur.

Rairangpur MLA Naba Charan Majhi has replaced Bisheshwar Tudu on Mayurbhaj seat. Malvika Keshari Dev has been made the new candidate in place of Basant Kumar Panda for Kalahandi Lok Sabha seat.

The sitting MPs who have been retained include Jual Oram – Sundergarh, Pratap Chandra Sarangi – Balasore, Sangeeta Kumari Singh Deo – Bolangir and Aparajita Sarangi – Bhubaneswar.

Other BJP candidates include Anant Nayak - Keonjhar, Abhimanyu Sethi - Bhadrak, Rudra Pani - Dhenkanal, Baijayant Panda - Kendrapara, Balbhadra Majhi - Nabarangpur, Bibhu Tarai - Jagatsinghpur, Sambit Patra - Puri, Pradeep Panigrahi - Berhampur and Kaliram Majhi - Koraput.

Congress has released the list of some candidates but the complete list is likely to be revealed soon. However, a triangular contest is certain in the state. LS.

Lok Sabha 2024 : The BJP's push to maximise its Lok Sabha seats tally in Maharashtra is likely to resurrect Raj Thackeray's Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) from political oblivion. Determined to blunt the challenge by the Uddhav Thackeray-led party, the BJP has reached out to his estranged cousin.

Raj Thackeray was in Delhi last night and is learnt to have met Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis to discuss his party's possible entry into the NDA. "I was told to come to Delhi. So I came. Let's see," the MNS chief said on arriving in the national capital.

MNS leader Sandeep Deshpande has said they will share details of the meeting soon. "Whatever decision will be taken will be for the greater good and in the interest of Marathis, Hindutva and the party," he said.

Why Is BJP Wooing MNS

The answer to why the BJP is reaching out to MNS lies in how Maharashtra's political landscape has transformed since the 2019 Lok Sabha polls. In the last general election, the BJP and the Shiv Sena contested the polls together. The alliance decimated rivals and won 41 out of the state's 48 seats. Months later, it clinched another victory in the state polls. But differences over sharing power led to the Sena parting ways with the NDA. The Shiv Sena, then led by Uddhav Thackeray, teamed up with NCP and the Congress to form the government. But more drama was to follow. In 2022, Sena leader Eknath Shinde led a mutiny that toppled the Uddhav Thackeray government. Mr Shinde then joined ranks with BJP to take over. In the legal battle that followed, Uddhav Thackeray lost his party's name and symbol and his camp was named Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray).

In a strikingly similar manner, the Sharad Pawar-led NCP split after a rebellion led by his nephew Ajit Pawar. The NCP veteran, too, lost his party's name and symbol and now leads a faction named NCP (Sharadchandra Pawar). So from a straight contest in 2019, the Maharashtra Lok Sabha fight is now a multipronged battle with the BJP, NCP and Shiv Sena on one side and the Congress and the camps led by Sharad Pawar and Uddhav Thackeray on the other.

The BJP knows that it is a tricky terrain and it is in no mood to take chances in the politically-significant state that is critical to the BJP's target to win 370 Lok Sabha seats. So to counter the Uddhav Thackeray factor, it has reached out to his cousin Raj.

MNS Eyes Big Return

Founded in 2006 after Raj Thackeray walked out of Shiv Sena over differences with cousin Uddhav, the MNS recorded its best electoral performance in the 2009 state polls when it won 13 seats. In the 2014 elections, however, it emerged as the big loser, winning just one seat. In the 2019 polls, too, its tally remained unchanged.

Over the past decade, Raj Thackeray has struggled to stay in the political limelight with often controversial remarks in the media. When the Shiv Sena split, he went all out against his estranged cousin, holding him responsible for the party's crisis. He has also warmed up to Eknath Shinde, with the two leaders meeting on several occasions.

Election Commission to announce Lok Sabha election dates tomorrow

New Delhi : The Election Commission will announce the dates of Lok Sabha elections 2024 at 3 pm tomorrow. The dates of assembly elections will also announced for Odisha, Sikkim, Arunachal Pradesh and Andhra Pradesh.

Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar along with newly appointed Election Commissioners Gyanesh Kumar and Sukhbir Singh Sandhu will announce the dates of Lok Sabha elections. It will be live streamed on all the social media platforms of the Election Commission. According to the sources, it is expected that Lok Sabha elections can be held in seven to eight phases.

Along with this, the dates of assembly elections will also be announced in some states. These include Odisha, Sikkim, Arunachal Pradesh and Andhra Pradesh. Along with this, the code of conduct will also be implemented in the entire country. The tenure of the current Lok Sabha is ending on June 16.(L.S)

A five-judge Constitution bench of the Supreme Court on Monday asked the State Bank of India

New Delhi: A five-judge Constitution bench of the Supreme Court on Monday asked the State Bank of India to apprise it about the steps taken so far to ensure disclosure of details of electoral bonds encashed by political parties before the scheme was scrapped last month.

Commencing the crucial hearing, the bench headed by Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud said it had asked the SBI to do a “plain disclosure” as per the court’s judgment.

In a landmark verdict delivered on February 15, a five-judge Constitution bench scrapped the Centre’s electoral bonds scheme that allowed anonymous political funding, calling it “unconstitutional” and ordered disclosure by the Election Commission of donors, the amount donated by them and the recipients by March 13.

“In the last 26 days, what steps have you taken? Your application is silent on that,” the bench, also comprising justices Sanjiv Khanna, B R Gavai, J B Pardiwala, and Manoj Misra, said.

The SBI has to just open the sealed cover, collate the details and give the information to the Election Commission, the bench said.

The hearing in the case is underway.

The State Bank of India has sought an extension till June 30 to disclose the details of each electoral bond encashed by political parties before the scheme was scrapped.

A separate plea, seeking initiation of contempt action against the SBI is also being heard.
