New Delhi : The court has allowed Arvind Kejriwal to meet his wife and two ministers - Atishi and Saurabh Bhardwaj - before he is shifted to Tihar Jail. Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal will spend the next two weeks in jail in the liquor policy case after his Enforcement Directorate custody ends today. The probe agency did not seek custody of the AAP leader, after which a local court this morning sent him to jail till April 15. The court has also allowed him to meet his wife Sunita Kejriwal and ministers Atishi and Saurabh Bhardwaj before he is shifted to the Tihar Jail.

Mr Kejriwal was arrested on March 21 in the alleged liquor policy scam after he skipped nine central agency summons, and has been running his government from the ED lock-up since then. In Delhi's Rouse Avenue court, where Mr Kejriwal was produced this morning before the expiry of his probe agency custody, the ED said he had been "uncooperative" and was giving evasive answers. He did not reveal the passwords of his digital devices, the ED told the court.

The agency said Mr Kejriwal gave false evidence against other AAP members, and when confronted with the statements of his own party leaders, he called them confused. He also said that Vijay Nair, AAP communications in-charge who has turned an approver, didn't report to him but to Atishi and Mr Bhardwaj, according to the ED.

Mr Kejriwal's lawyer has demanded some medicines and a special diet for him inside the jail in view of his illness. A request has also been made to provide a copy of Ramayan, Mahabharat, and How Prime Ministers Decide (by Neerja Chowdhury) to the jailed Chief Minister.

The Chief Minister has also moved the Delhi High Court against his arrest, arguing that his fundamental rights were violated by the probe agency. The court had issued a notice to the ED, seeking a reply by April 2. The hearing will resume on April 3.

Mr Kejriwal is the third AAP leader after his former deputy Manish Sisodia and Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh to be arrested in the liquor policy case. He has dubbed his arrest a "political conspiracy".

He had also addressed the courtroom during his last hearing and asserted no court had proven him guilty. "The CBI has filed 31,000 pages (of chargesheets) and ED filed 25,000 pages. Even if you read them together... the question remains... why have I been arrested?" he had said. The excise policy was introduced to bring an overhaul to the liquor business in Delhi but was scrapped after Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena ordered a probe into the alleged irregularities in the policy. The ED believes the policy provided a high profit margin and bribe money was allegedly used to fund the AAP's election campaigns. (Agency)

New Delhi : Leaders of the India Alliance today called on the people to oust the NDA government at the Center from power in this election. The leaders of the alliance made this call in the "Remove Dictator, Save Democracy" rally organized from the historic Ramlila Maidan here. This rally was addressed by many leaders including Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav, Sunita Kejriwal, wife of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, as he is jailed on corruption charges.

Opposition leaders alleged that the central government wants to suppress the voice of the opposition by misusing the investigating agencies. They said that the arrest of former Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal is part of this.

They also alleged that the ruling NDA government at the Center had taken inflation and unemployment to its peak during its 9-year tenure. Government institutions are being handed over to private hands.

In the rally, CM Arvind Kejriwal's wife Sunita Kejriwal read out the message of CM Kejriwal. AAP leaders also alleged that the workers coming by bus for the grand rally of India Alliance at Ramlila Maidan were dropped near Rajghat from where the crowd of people passed through the traffic to reach the rally venue. Bhubaneswar : Once again a triangular contest is going to take place in Odisha. The ruling Biju Janata Dal (BJD) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) could not form an alliance in the state and both the parties are now contesting the elections on their own. Congress is clapping separately.

There are 21 Lok Sabha seats and 147 assembly seats in Odisha and Lok Sabha and Assembly elections are scheduled to be held simultaneously in four phases on 13, 20, 25 May and 1 June.

In the elections held in 2014, Biju Janata Dal got about 43 percent votes. Apart from this, Congress got the support of 25.6 percent and BJP got the support of 18 percent voters. In the year 2019, the situation of BJP changed and it became the second largest party in the state after BJD. However, even after this Naveen Patnaik took oath as the CM of the state.

Odisha Chief Minister and Biju Janata Dal chief Naveen Patnaik released the first list of 9 candidates for the Lok Sabha and 72 for the state assembly, yesterday. Mr Patnaik himself will contest from Hinjili Assembly constituency.

BJD General Secretary Organization Pranab Prakash Das has been made the candidate from Sambalpur Lok Sabha seat, where he will face Union Minister and BJP candidate Dharmendra Pradhan. Odisha minister Sudam Marandi will contest from Mayurbhanj Lok Sabha seat, while former Indian hockey team captain Dilip Tirkey will face former Union minister and outgoing MP Jual Oram from Sundergarh Lok Sabha seat.

Other candidates for the BJD Lok Sabha seat include Lambodar Niyal - Kalahandi, Ansuman Mohanty - Kendrapara, Prajip Kumar Majhi - Navrangpur, Manmath Routray - Bhubaneswar, Kaushalya Hikaka - Koraput and Ranjita Sahu - Aska.

Mr Patnaik himself will contest from Hinjili Assembly constituency in Ganjam district. The 72 candidates announced for the Assembly include 13 new faces and 12 women candidates.

The BJP last Sunday announced the names of its candidates for 18 of the 21 Lok Sabha seats in Odisha, while dropping four sitting MPs from the list. The party has not yet announced candidates for Cuttack, Jajpur and Kandhamal Lok Sabha constituencies.

The party has fielded four women - Aparajita Sarangi - Bhubaneswar, Sangeeta Kumari Dev - Bolangir, Malvika Keshari Dev - Kalahandi and Anita Subhadarshini from Aska.

The sitting MPs who have not been given tickets by BJP this time include Suresh Pujari - Bargarh, Union Minister Bisheshwar Tudu - Mayurbhanj, Nitish Gang Deb - Sambalpur and Basant Panda - Kalahandi.

The party has nominated Pradeep Purohit in place of Mr Pujari, while Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan has replaced Nitish Gang Deb in Sambalpur.

Rairangpur MLA Naba Charan Majhi has replaced Bisheshwar Tudu on Mayurbhaj seat. Malvika Keshari Dev has been made the new candidate in place of Basant Kumar Panda for Kalahandi Lok Sabha seat.

The sitting MPs who have been retained include Jual Oram – Sundergarh, Pratap Chandra Sarangi – Balasore, Sangeeta Kumari Singh Deo – Bolangir and Aparajita Sarangi – Bhubaneswar.

Other BJP candidates include Anant Nayak - Keonjhar, Abhimanyu Sethi - Bhadrak, Rudra Pani - Dhenkanal, Baijayant Panda - Kendrapara, Balbhadra Majhi - Nabarangpur, Bibhu Tarai - Jagatsinghpur, Sambit Patra - Puri, Pradeep Panigrahi - Berhampur and Kaliram Majhi - Koraput.

Congress has released the list of some candidates but the complete list is likely to be revealed soon. However, a triangular contest is certain in the state. LS.

Lok Sabha 2024 : The BJP's push to maximise its Lok Sabha seats tally in Maharashtra is likely to resurrect Raj Thackeray's Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) from political oblivion. Determined to blunt the challenge by the Uddhav Thackeray-led party, the BJP has reached out to his estranged cousin.

Raj Thackeray was in Delhi last night and is learnt to have met Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis to discuss his party's possible entry into the NDA. "I was told to come to Delhi. So I came. Let's see," the MNS chief said on arriving in the national capital.

MNS leader Sandeep Deshpande has said they will share details of the meeting soon. "Whatever decision will be taken will be for the greater good and in the interest of Marathis, Hindutva and the party," he said.

Why Is BJP Wooing MNS

The answer to why the BJP is reaching out to MNS lies in how Maharashtra's political landscape has transformed since the 2019 Lok Sabha polls. In the last general election, the BJP and the Shiv Sena contested the polls together. The alliance decimated rivals and won 41 out of the state's 48 seats. Months later, it clinched another victory in the state polls. But differences over sharing power led to the Sena parting ways with the NDA. The Shiv Sena, then led by Uddhav Thackeray, teamed up with NCP and the Congress to form the government. But more drama was to follow. In 2022, Sena leader Eknath Shinde led a mutiny that toppled the Uddhav Thackeray government. Mr Shinde then joined ranks with BJP to take over. In the legal battle that followed, Uddhav Thackeray lost his party's name and symbol and his camp was named Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray).

In a strikingly similar manner, the Sharad Pawar-led NCP split after a rebellion led by his nephew Ajit Pawar. The NCP veteran, too, lost his party's name and symbol and now leads a faction named NCP (Sharadchandra Pawar). So from a straight contest in 2019, the Maharashtra Lok Sabha fight is now a multipronged battle with the BJP, NCP and Shiv Sena on one side and the Congress and the camps led by Sharad Pawar and Uddhav Thackeray on the other.

The BJP knows that it is a tricky terrain and it is in no mood to take chances in the politically-significant state that is critical to the BJP's target to win 370 Lok Sabha seats. So to counter the Uddhav Thackeray factor, it has reached out to his cousin Raj.

MNS Eyes Big Return

Founded in 2006 after Raj Thackeray walked out of Shiv Sena over differences with cousin Uddhav, the MNS recorded its best electoral performance in the 2009 state polls when it won 13 seats. In the 2014 elections, however, it emerged as the big loser, winning just one seat. In the 2019 polls, too, its tally remained unchanged.

Over the past decade, Raj Thackeray has struggled to stay in the political limelight with often controversial remarks in the media. When the Shiv Sena split, he went all out against his estranged cousin, holding him responsible for the party's crisis. He has also warmed up to Eknath Shinde, with the two leaders meeting on several occasions.

Election Commission to announce Lok Sabha election dates tomorrow

New Delhi : The Election Commission will announce the dates of Lok Sabha elections 2024 at 3 pm tomorrow. The dates of assembly elections will also announced for Odisha, Sikkim, Arunachal Pradesh and Andhra Pradesh.

Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar along with newly appointed Election Commissioners Gyanesh Kumar and Sukhbir Singh Sandhu will announce the dates of Lok Sabha elections. It will be live streamed on all the social media platforms of the Election Commission. According to the sources, it is expected that Lok Sabha elections can be held in seven to eight phases.

Along with this, the dates of assembly elections will also be announced in some states. These include Odisha, Sikkim, Arunachal Pradesh and Andhra Pradesh. Along with this, the code of conduct will also be implemented in the entire country. The tenure of the current Lok Sabha is ending on June 16.(L.S)

A five-judge Constitution bench of the Supreme Court on Monday asked the State Bank of India

New Delhi: A five-judge Constitution bench of the Supreme Court on Monday asked the State Bank of India to apprise it about the steps taken so far to ensure disclosure of details of electoral bonds encashed by political parties before the scheme was scrapped last month.

Commencing the crucial hearing, the bench headed by Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud said it had asked the SBI to do a “plain disclosure” as per the court’s judgment.

In a landmark verdict delivered on February 15, a five-judge Constitution bench scrapped the Centre’s electoral bonds scheme that allowed anonymous political funding, calling it “unconstitutional” and ordered disclosure by the Election Commission of donors, the amount donated by them and the recipients by March 13.

“In the last 26 days, what steps have you taken? Your application is silent on that,” the bench, also comprising justices Sanjiv Khanna, B R Gavai, J B Pardiwala, and Manoj Misra, said.

The SBI has to just open the sealed cover, collate the details and give the information to the Election Commission, the bench said.

The hearing in the case is underway.

The State Bank of India has sought an extension till June 30 to disclose the details of each electoral bond encashed by political parties before the scheme was scrapped.

A separate plea, seeking initiation of contempt action against the SBI is also being heard.

Farmers' protest: 'Delhi Chalo' march to restart amid tight security at borders of national capital

New Delhi : As protesting farmers are set to resume their march once again to the capital city Delhi, to press for their demands including minimum price guarantees for their crops, the police has increased security at the Punjab and Haryana borders.

The Kisan Mazdoor Morcha and the Samyukta Kisan Morcha (Non-Political), the two umbrella bodies that are leading the farmers' protests, on March 3 gave a call to farmers from across the country to reach the national capital today.

While the farmers from Punjab and Haryana will continue the agitation at Shambhu and Khanauri border points, the farmers and farm labourers from other states have been asked to reach Delhi today.

Their various demands to the central government include a legal guarantee on MSP for crops, pension for farmers and farm labourers, farm debt waiver, and no hike in electricity tariffs.

Farmer leader Sarwan Singh Pandher alleged that the central government was not taking the demand of farmers on Minimum support price seriously.

"They (the centre) should make it clear what they have a stand on MSP. Did they discuss this issue in their last meeting of the ministers' council? If not, it means that the Centre does not intend to give us the guarantee of MSP," he said.

Coming down heavily at the Centre, Pandher claimed it was responsible for the 'economic loss' in Punjab due to the closure of its border with Haryana in view of the protest.

"Government is responsible for economic loss in Punjab due to closures of its border with Haryana. We have to sell our vegetables and other things outside the state, but due to the closure of the borders, we are not able to do so. Will the Centre take responsibility? The Centre has deployed 70,000 Paramilitary forces in Haryana, I just want to ask, what the Centre fears about. What type of danger the Centre is feared with the people of Haryana?" he said.

Asserting that the protests launched by cultivators are growing day by day, the farmer leader said, "Today is the 23rd day of the protest launched by KMM and SKM (non-political). An announcement was made earlier that farmers from other states will start marching towards Delhi from today but farmers coming from far-off places will not be able to reach Delhi today. Farmers coming by road or train from Madhya Pradesh, Bihar or Southern India will not reach today, they will take a minimum of 2-3 days. Therefore, the situation would be clear by March 10. Farmers from nearby states have already decided not to move forward."

He also accused the government of not paying attention to the demands of the farmers.

"The central government is busy with its elections preparations and not giving the attention towards the welfare of the farmers," he said.

Notably, the farmers have also called for a four-hour countrywide "rail roko" next week in support of their various demands.

The protesting farmers have been staying put at the Shambhu and the Khanauri border points between Punjab and Haryana after their "Delhi Chalo" march was stopped by security personnel on February 13.

During the last round of talks, which ended past midnight on February 18, the panel of three Union ministers made an offer to buy five crops -- moong dal, urad dal, tur dal, maize, and cotton -- from farmers at MSP for five years through central agencies. However, the protesting farmers turned down the demand and returned to their protest sites.

Mr. Singh said that I have also worked as a journalist. I started my career as a journalist in 1991 and always worked to convey the voices of the poor, backward, Dalits, women, farmers and students of the society to the government through letters.

Dr. Sita Kumari, assistant professor of Gokul Karpuri Phuleshwari Degree College, Karpuri Village, Samastipur, said that journalism is a difficult and challenging job. Today the women of our country are working in all fields including running trains, flying airplanes, army, but the presence in the field of journalism is negligible.

Tiger population rises to 30 in Odisha

As per the All India Tiger Estimation (AITE), 2022 report, minimum 17 tigers were camera-trapped in Odisha, which was largely confined to Similipal Tiger Reserve.

The population of royal Bengal tigers has gone up to 30 in the past two years in Odisha, according to the maiden All Odisha Tiger Estimation (AOTE) 2023-24 report released by the State forest department.

As per the All India Tiger Estimation (AITE), 2022 report, minimum 17 tigers were camera-trapped in Odisha, which was largely confined to Similipal Tiger Reserve.

However, a total of 27 unique adult tigers were camera-trapped in Odisha during the AOTE exercise, comprising 14 females and 13 males. Evidence of another 3 adult tigers was also seen in the Similipal tiger reserve, which have not been camera trapped.

With 24 adult unique tigers, Similipal Tiger Reserve currently holds the largest share of the state’s tiger population. Similipal currently holds all the adult female tigers of the state. In total, 13 adult tigers (seven females and six males) were found to be pseudo-melanistic in Similipal, the report said.

In order to keep a close track of its tiger population and develop appropriate management strategy, the AOTE 2023-2024 was conducted, which spanned across 47 forest divisions, aimed at much more intensive state-level tiger monitoring.

A State-level field survey was conducted to look for tiger signs such as pugmarks, scrapes, scats, rakes, urine spray, vocalization and livestock depredation. Sites where the direct and indirect signs of tigers were found with certainty were intensively camera-trapped to arrive at the minimum number of unique adult tigers based on their distinctive stripe pattern. Camera trap image based identification of tigers is a scientifically accepted methodology and is also used in the All India Tiger Estimation exercises.

Seven cubs which were of less than one year were also photo-captured in Similipal. Apart from Similipal, the Hirakud Wildlife Division and Paralakhemundi Territorial Forest Division, each holds one adult male tiger. Another adult male tiger was also found to utilise Greater Similipal tiger Landscape.

The tiger abundance has increased in Odisha from the previous estimate of AITE 2022. Similipal Tiger Reserve, which currently harbours 27 unique adult individuals, has also witnessed an increase from 16 tigers captured through Camera Traps in 2021-2022.

This growth has resulted from strict management actions and scientific conservation practices. The images of eight unique tiger cubs during AOTE 2023, indicate a recovering population in Similipal landscape.

Similipal is the only place on earth to boast the pseudo-melanistic tigers, the report added.

Appeal to the PM regarding investigation into the suspicious death of Pappu Paswan.

New Delhi : Wife Vibha Devi has appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah and top officials of Delhi Police, demanding a high-level investigation into the death of deceased mason Pappu Paswan under suspicious circumstances.

Vibha, the wife of the deceased, has said in a letter that her husband used to work as a mason at a fielder's house in Vivek Vihar police station area of Delhi, who died under suspicious circumstances on December 11, 2023. But when the police investigated the incident , the case was dismissed without a thorough investigation. Even a FIR was not registered.

Vibha Devi, a resident of Saharsa district of Bihar, has said in the application that it has been written in the post-mortem report that her husband Pappu's ribs were broken, blood was leaking from the nose, ears and other places. This makes it clear that it is due to beating.

The wife of the deceased has also mentioned in the application that her husband had a dispute with three of Wilder's business owners regarding the payment of dues. Whose names have been mentioned in the application and action has been sought by filing a named FIR against them.

Central Government should immediately implement the railway concession given to journalists - Ramnath Vidrohi, National President, IJA!

Patna (Bihar) : In the online meeting of the Indian Journalist Association (IJA) held today, the journalists asked the Central Government, especially the Railway Minister, to immediately restore the ticket concession given to all accredited journalists in rail travel. For a long time, journalists have been deprived of concessions, due to which journalists have to spend more in traveling for their work, which is a violation of the rights of journalists. In the meeting, it was decided to submit a memorandum to the Prime Minister, Railway Minister and Railway Board.

In the meeting, the members raised concerns about difficulty in getting recognition, difficulty in applying for pension, implementation of journalist protection law, denial of comforts and facilities to mofussil journalists by the newspaper's management, murder of journalists/even in emergency situations, any action taken by the management and the government. Serious concern was expressed over no compensation or relief being given. For this, it was decided to write to the Chief Ministers of various states along with the Union Home Minister and Information Minister and meet them.
