aipur - The "Child Marriage Free Chhattisgarh" campaign, spearheaded by the state government under the leadership of Chief Minister Vishnu Dev Sai, appears to be effectively taking shape on the ground. Due to the vigilance and sensitivity of the Women and Child Development Department and the district administration, the child marriage of a 12-year-old girl, who had crossed rivers and streams in a remote and inaccessible area, was prevented in time. This swift action not only secured the future of an innocent child but also sent a powerful message to society against the evil practice of child marriage.

According to information received, on January 2, 2026, the administration received information that a minor girl was being married in the remote village of Nadigufa, part of the Gram Panchayat Ramaram, under the Sukma development block. Taking the information seriously, the Collector, under the guidance of the Collector, issued instructions for immediate necessary action. Subsequently, a joint team of the District Child Protection Unit, Child Line, and departmental staff was formed under the leadership of the District Women and Child Development Officer. Despite overflowing rivers and streams and extremely difficult geographical conditions, the team traveled on foot to the village and intervened in the marriage process in a timely manner.

On the spot, it was found that all preparations for the marriage had been completed as per traditional customs. The officials sensitively informed the family and villagers about the provisions of the Child Marriage Prohibition Act, 2006, its legal obligations, and its serious social consequences. The administration's persuasion had a positive impact, and the family voluntarily decided to stop the child marriage. The action was formalized by preparing a proper Panchnama in the presence of the villagers. During the action, the family was encouraged to reintegrate the girl into mainstream education and ensure her a safe and respectable future. Information about various government schemes related to child protection and education was also provided.

It is noteworthy that Chief Minister Shri Vishnu Dev Sai launched the "Child Marriage Free Chhattisgarh" campaign on March 10, 2024. The state government has notified 13,823 Child Marriage Prohibition Officers under Section 16 of the Child Marriage Prohibition Act, 2006. As a result of the campaign's effective implementation, 189 child marriages have been prevented in the state by November 2025. Due to the state government's continued efforts and public participation, Balod district has been declared completely child marriage-free, serving as an inspiration for the entire state. For the year 2025-26, the state government has set a target of declaring 50 percent of the state's gram panchayats and urban bodies child marriage-free by March 31, 2026, and making Chhattisgarh a completely child marriage-free state by March 31, 2029. Chief Minister Shri Vishnu Dev Sai and Women and Child Development Minister Smt. Laxmi Rajwade have clarified that ensuring a safe, educated and dignified future for children is the top priority of the state government. Administrative vigilance, public awareness and prompt action will continue to eradicate social evils like child marriage.
