Rahul Gandhi mentions Meloni on stage, BJP accuses Congress of being anti-women
New Delhi. A comment made at a Congress event regarding Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has now escalated into a political controversy. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has launched a scathing attack on the Congress party over the on-stage conversation between Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi and Congress leader Sandeep Dikshit. The BJP has called the remarks disrespectful and irresponsible towards women.
The controversy erupted during the "Constructive Congress" conference held at Delhi's Malvankar Hall. At the event, Rahul Gandhi was criticizing Prime Minister Narendra Modi's foreign policy. He stated that the Prime Minister's job is not to cultivate personal friendships, but to protect the nation's interests.
During his address, Rahul Gandhi embraced Congress leader Sandeep Dixit, who was present on stage, and took a dig at Prime Minister Modi's foreign policy. Dixit then mentioned Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. A video of the event quickly went viral on social media, prompting strong objections from the BJP.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma wrote on social media that making such comments about a woman Prime Minister of a friendly country is against political decency. He criticized the Congress party, calling it disrespectful to women.
BJP Mahila Morcha National President Vanathi Srinivasan also criticized the Congress party, saying that mocking a female leader in the name of political opposition is not appropriate. Meanwhile, BJP MP Bansuri Swaraj called Rahul Gandhi's remarks undignified.
On the other hand, Congress spokesperson Shama Mohammed, while responding to the allegations of BJP, said that before talking about the respect of women, BJP should also pay attention to the old statements and decisions of its leaders.
Social media was also divided over the controversy. Many political analysts and senior journalists criticized Sandeep Dixit's comments as inappropriate, while others accused the BJP of adopting double standards.
At present, this matter has gone beyond political rhetoric and has become a subject of debate on women's respect and political dignity.
