On this occasion, women prepared Sagri as per the rituals and offered traditional puja materials in it. Traditional ingredients like Laai, Mahua, sesame and Arhar were used in the puja along with buffalo milk, curd and ghee. According to the tradition of the festival, grains produced in the fields ploughed by the plough are not consumed on this day. After the puja, women broke their fast by consuming Prasad prepared from Pashar rice and various types of vegetables. Kamarchhat is a major festival of Chhattisgarh associated with folk culture and maternal faith. On this festival celebrated on the Shashthi Tithi of Krishna Paksha of Bhado month, mothers observe fast for the long life of their children and happiness of the family.

Also celebrated as Balarama's birth anniversary:
​​Krishna Paksha Shashthi is also celebrated as the birth anniversary of Balarama, Lord Krishna's elder brother. Balarama is considered an incarnation of Sheshnag. Lord Balarama's primary weapons are the plough and pestle. Because of his ploughing, he is called Haldhar, and the festival is named Halshasthi. He is the seventh child of Mother Devaki and Vasudeva. This festival is also celebrated six days after Shravan Purnima under the names Chandrashashthi, Baldev Chhath, and Randhan Shashthi.

Mythological story:
It is believed that after Kansa killed six of Devaki's sons, she observed a fast on the sixth day of the dark fortnight of Bhado month, worshipping Goddess Shashthi. Another story says that Abhimanyu's wife, Uttara, observed the Halshasthi fast, which ensured the survival of their son, Parikshit.

The tradition of beating with a cloth

After the puja, mothers dip new clothes in the water of the sagri (water pot), take them home, and touch their children's waists/backs six times, a practice known as poti maarana (water poti). It is believed that this practice increases the child's lifespan.
