The government has taken Prime Minister Narendra Modi's pledge of 'Water for Every Home' to every village. The Jal Jeevan Mission has transformed life in Pandri village.

Raipur, September 21, 2026/ Once upon a time, people had to leave their homes with the first rays of the morning light to fetch water. Carrying a pot on their head to a distant water source, waiting for hours, and then returning with water was part of everyday life for the women of village Pandri. It was common for children to help the family fetch water. This struggle for water not only took time but also disrupted the family's daily routine, the children's education, and other important tasks for women.

Today, the landscape of that same village, Pandri, has transformed. The tap in the courtyard of a home is no longer just a source of water, but a symbol of changing rural life. With the Jal Jeevan Mission, tap connections are reaching every household, providing rural families with access to clean and safe drinking water at their doorsteps. The compulsion to travel far for water has diminished, and a long-standing difficulty has become a convenience.

Today, the village of Pandri in the Marwahi development block of the tribal-dominated Gaurela-Pendra-Marwahi district presents a vivid story of this transformation. For many women in the village, including Mrs. Sheela Kewat, tap water is a daily convenience, the importance of which can only be understood by those who have traveled long distances for water.

Mrs. Sheela Kewat explains that previously, she had to leave important household chores to go far away to fetch water. Often, fetching water would consume a significant portion of the morning. Now, having tap water available at home has brought immense convenience. Time is saved, and that time can be used for children, family, and other activities. For her, every stream of water from the tap brings not only convenience to the home but also hope for a better future for the family.

This story of village Pandri also connects with the vision of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, in which providing tap water to every family in rural India was given priority. On August 15, 2019, Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi announced the Jal Jeevan Mission and pledged to provide safe drinking water to rural families through domestic tap connections. At that time, out of the 18.93 crore rural families in the country, only about 3.23 crore, or about 17 percent, had access to tap water.

The vision of the Jal Jeevan Mission goes beyond simply laying pipes and installing taps. The mission aims to provide rural households with regular and safe drinking water, while also promoting measures such as water conservation, rainwater harvesting, water recharge, and graywater management. Furthermore, the mission is focused on developing the mission into a "people's movement" based on public participation.

The impact of this approach is evident in rural life in the village of Pandri. While water was once a constant worry at the start of the day, the convenience of having a tap in your home has significantly reduced this worry.
