Raipur. As part of the Raipur Literature Festival, a large audience gathered at the Aniruddha Nirav Mandap to listen to a discussion on society and cinema, in which renowned Hindi film writer-director Mr. Anurag Basu, historian, screenwriter and producer Dr. Chandraprakash Dwivedi, and film writer Mr. Anant Vijay participated. The discussion was moderated by Chhattisgarh's renowned writer-director Mr. Manoj Verma.
Hindi film director Anurag Basu, participating in the discussion, described cinema as a tool that can shape a corrupted society. He said that people take risks to make such films. If we expect social concern from cinema, many writers and directors are still fulfilling this responsibility. Basu said that the same amount of films are made today as in the 1990s, in fact, the number of films is even higher. Today, cinema has more technology, but the stories remain the same. New stories are emerging, and films are being made on new subjects. If we call a film made by a writer-director good or bad, it is our personal opinion, because the film has been made with complete honesty, and in our opinion, it is a good film. Mr. Basu further said that whenever we discuss films, our likes and dislikes automatically come to the fore. He described films as an essential part of society.During his address at the discussion, Dr. Chandraprakash Dwivedi said that today, there's more talk about a film's success or failure. The standards for viewing cinema have changed. Cinema no longer has social concern. Cinema will only address your questions if they benefit it significantly. The era of cinema is changing. Dwivedi said that you can't make a Chanakya in today's time. The level of Hindi in Hindi cinema is a major challenge. Everyone talks about simplifying cinema, but English words are used in Hindi. Drawing on his own experience, he explained that biographies are being made only on those that yield significant benefits. Referring to the serial "Upanishad Ganga," he said that "Upanishad Ganga" contains very serious work, while "Chanakya" reflects the reality of that time.
In this session, cinema writer Anant Vijay said that cinema is not an elite medium. Discussion doesn't happen until we watch a film. Nowadays, people don't watch films, they only discuss them. There's no scientific basis for love. People form an emotional connection with the stories and characters in films. This connection determines a film's commercial and social value.
