Mekara doctors' amazing feat: Successful surgery on a critical patient with an arrow lodged in his back, saving his life in time

Raipur. The General Surgery Department of Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar Smriti Chikitsalaya (Mekara) in Raipur, the capital, successfully treated a highly complex and challenging trauma case, saving the life of a seriously injured patient. The patient, a resident of Gariaband district, was referred to Mekara in critical condition for advanced treatment after an arrow pierced his abdomen through the back. Dr. Manju Singh, Head of the General Surgery Department, stated that preliminary medical examination and necessary tests revealed that the arrow was deeply embedded in the abdomen, affecting several vital internal organs. The patient was at risk of abdominal perforation, internal bleeding, and serious infection. According to doctors, any delay in treatment could have proved fatal for the patient.

Upon arrival at the hospital, the specialist team from the General Surgery Department quickly assessed the patient's condition and, without delay, decided to perform an emergency operation on July 2, 2026. During the operation, doctors carefully removed the arrow from the body. Subsequently, they repaired the damaged internal organs and tissues, controlled the bleeding, and cleaned the blood and contaminated fluid accumulated within the abdomen, performing essential life-saving procedures. Following the successful surgery, the patient was admitted to the post-operative ICU, where his treatment continues under the supervision of specialist doctors and trained nursing staff. According to the hospital, the patient's condition is now stable and his health is improving steadily. If this improvement continues, he will be discharged from the hospital soon.

Hospital Superintendent Dr. Santosh Sonkar stated that the patient arrived at the hospital in a very critical condition, but thanks to the prompt response of the surgery department, modern medical facilities, and the coordinated efforts of a team of expert doctors, his life was saved. He added that Mekara has state-of-the-art operating theaters, specialist doctors, and 24-hour emergency services to treat serious trauma and emergency cases. This successful operation was performed by Dr. Sukhlal Nirala, Dr. Manish Sahu, Dr. Roshan Ratnakar, under the leadership of Dr. Manju Singh, Head of the General Surgery Department, and Dr. Pratibha Jain Sah, Head of the Anesthesia Department, and Dr. Jaya Lalwani and their team.
