Agnipath protests: Railways cancels 529 trains

New Delhi, Jun 20 (PTI) More than 500 trains were cancelled on Monday with operations again disrupted by protests against the Agnipath defence recruitment scheme.

While 539 trains were affected, 529 trains were cancelled, including 181 mail/express trains and 348 passengers trains, the Railways said in a statement.

The Railways also partially cancelled four mail/express trains.

Thiruvananthapuram, Jun 18 (PTI) Hundreds of youth on Saturday took out a massive protest march here against the Centre's decision to implement the new Agnipath scheme for the recruitment of soldiers, airmen and sailors.

Large number of army job aspirants, who have been reportedly waiting to get enrolled into the defence service, gathered at Thampanoor, located in the heart of the city, in the morning and marched to Raj Bhavan, the official residence of Governor Arif Mohammed Khan.

They could be seen raising slogans against the Union government's new military recruitment scheme and holding placards and banners urging the authorities to withdraw their decision at the earliest.

The protesting youth were reportedly hailing from various parts of the southern state.

An agitating man said they would continue the strike till the Centre rolls back its decision and justice is ensured to them.

"Many of us have decided to join the army and started preparations for the examination after dropping our graduation studies midway. What will we do if the Centre goes ahead with this scheme? Our future will be in peril. So, we will continue our fight till we get justice," he said.

Violent protests have broken out in parts of the country demanding the Centre to roll back Agnipath scheme unveiled by the Ministry of Defence which is a pan-India merit-based recruitment scheme for enrolling soldiers, airmen and sailors.

Trains were set afire, public and police vehicles attacked and personnel injured as protests over 'Agnipath' snowballed and swept across several states including Uttar Pradesh and Bihar on Thursday and Friday.

On Friday, a 24-year-old man was shot dead in police firing during protests in Telangana's Secunderabad.

Under the scheme, young persons will be provided an opportunity to serve in the armed forces as 'Agniveer' for a period of four years, including training period.

Secunderabad : One person was killed and three others injured in the police firing on youths protesting at the Secunderabad railway station on Friday against the Central government's new military recruitment policy.

Police opened fire after the protesters went on a rampage at the station setting afire two trains and vandalising the station. The injured were admitted to Gandhi Hospital.

The situation continued to be tense as a large number of protesters remained in the station and on the tracks. The protesters were pelting stones on police while the latter were retaliating with firing of rubber bullets and teargas shells.

The Railway Protection Force, Government Railway Police and city police were trying to bring the situation under control.

Additional forces were rushed to the area which resembled a battle zone. Authorities have cancelled all the trains. With the Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (TSRTC) buses also being targeted outside the station, the corporation suspended bus services in the area.

Violence rocked the railway station here as hundreds of youth went on a rampage, setting afire East Coast Express. Passengers ran for their safety. Several bogies were gutted.

Raising slogans against the Central government, the protesters also torched bogies of another train on the station, stalls, display boards and other railway property. They also dumped parcel articles on the tracks and set them afire.

The protesters, who were raising slogans of 'Jai jawan Jai kisan' and 'Bharat Mata ki Jai' ,demanded that the government scrap the recently announced scheme and continue the existing system of recruitment.

The youth were angry that the government cancelled the recruitment examination for which they had been preparing for the last 3-4 years. They said their protest would continue till the Centre scraps the new scheme.

Following the large-scale violence, an alert was sounded at all railway stations in Telangana. Security was tightened at Nampally, Kacheguda and other railway stations in Hyderabad.

Forces were also rushed to Kazipet and Jangaon railway stations as a precautionary measure.

Director General of Police Mr. Ashok Juneja reviewed the law and order situation in the state and effective crime prevention in a meeting organized through video conferencing at the Police Headquarters today. Inspector General of Police of all ranges and Superintendents of Police of all districts of the state attended the meeting.

DGP Mr. Juneja reviewed in detail the action taken against operators of chit fund companies and work being done to get back money of the investors duped by chit fund companies as per the instructions of Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel. He directed the officials concerned to take swift action in these cases. Besides, Mr. Juneja directed to take stern action against the criminals involved in drug trafficking, theft, robbery and knife crimes to curb related crimes in the state. He also directed to ensure effective action under the relevant Act against those involved activities like gambling, illegal betting and sale of illicit liquor.

While reviewing the control of property related crimes, violent crimes, crime against women and children in all the districts, DGP Juneja said that strict action should be taken against the accussed to control the related crimes.

Inquiring about the law and order situation in all the districts of the state, Juneja directed the officers to take all necessary measures and action to maintain social harmony in the state. He directed to take preventive action against criminals and goons in the state and take effective action to reduce social crime, gambling, betting and sale of illicit liquor.

After attending the meeting called by Trinamool Congress leader and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, Jharkhand Lok Sabha MP Vijay Hansdak on Wednesday confirmed that Banerjee mentioned two more names besides Sharad Pawar for the presidential elections.

“Mamta Banerjee mentioned two more names besides Sharad Pawar, which include the names of Farooq Abdullah and Gopalkrishna Gandhi. However, on these two names, no other party leader expressed an opinion in this meeting,” MP Vijay Hansdak told ANI.

He highlighted that NCP supremo Sharad Pawar would prepare a blueprint for the second meeting which would follow soon.

Hansdak stressed that new names were welcome and would be considered in the next meeting.

“Most of the party’s main leaders were not involved in today’s meeting, so no consensus has been reached on any other name except Sharad Pawar. The consensus is expected to be reached only after discussion with the top leader of the parties,” he added.

Earlier, Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) chief Sharad Pawar on Wednesday declined the Opposition leaders’ proposal to become the candidate for the election of President of India.

Taking to Twitter, he wrote, “I sincerely appreciate the leaders of opposition parties for suggesting my name as a candidate for the election of the President of India, at the meeting held in Delhi. However, I like to state that I have humbly declined the proposal of my candidature.”

The meeting was called by Trinamool Congress leader and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and was attended by leaders from 17 opposition parties. It coincided with the date of notification for the presidential polls.

“In today’s opposition meeting, all parties proposed the name of Sharad Pawar for the presidential poll, but he said he cannot take this up now due to his health. All parties requested him to reconsider his decision,” CPI leader Binoy Viswam told ANI.

Sudheendra Kulkarni said opposition parties are keen on a candidate “who can truly serve as custodian of the constitution and stop the Modi government from doing further damage to Indian democracy and India’s social fabric”.

Congress participated in the meeting along with 16 other political parties.

Apart from TMC, Congress and NCP, the parties which attended the meeting included CPI, CPI(M), CPIML, RSP, Shiv Sena, RJD, SP, National Conference, PDP, JD(S), DMK, RLD, IUML and JMM.

They participated in the meeting held at the Constitution Club of India here.

The polling for the presidential election is slated for July 18 and votes will be counted on July 21.

Presidential poll: Cong says will play constructive role in deciding consensus oppn candidate

New Delhi, (PTI) The Congress Wednesday said it will play a constructive role in ensuring all opposition parties arrive at a consensus candidate for the presidential poll, and urged them to be proactive rather than reactive in making the decision

Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge made the remarks after attending a meeting of opposition parties called by TMC chief Mamata Banerjee.

The Congress MP said his party has no particular candidate in mind for the poll, and that it will sit together with other parties to arrive at a name acceptable to all

The opposition meeting was attended by Kharge, Jairam Ramesh and Randeep Surjewala on behalf of the Congress

Kharge said the consensus opposition candidate for the highest constitutional post in the country should be someone committed to uphold the Constitution and preserve the secular fabric of "our diverse society and speak out boldly against the forces of prejudice, hatred, bigotry and polarisation"

Kharge said as Congress President Sonia Gandhi is unwell and has been hospitalised, she has asked him to speak to leaders of various parties opposed to the "divisive and destructive policies of the RSS/BJP" to explore the possibility of a joint opposition candidate for the presidential election

In a statement issued after the meeting of the 17 opposition parties here, Kharge said, "The Congress party will play a constructive role in ensuring that the parties assembled here this afternoon arrive at a consensus candidate in the next few days. Let us be proactive and not be reactive.

"The Congress Party has no particular candidate in mind. It will sit together with all of you and arrive at a candidate acceptable to all," he said.

"Such a candidate we believe," he said, "should be someone committed to upholding the Constitution of India, its values, principles and provisions in letter and spirit, someone committed to guaranteeing that all institutions of our democracy function without fear or favour."

He said the opposition should be someone committed to protecting the rights of all citizens and preserving the secular fabric of the country's diverse society. "Someone committed to speaking out boldly against the forces of prejudice, hatred, bigotry and polarisation and someone committed to being a powerful force for furthering social justice and empowerment."

The TMC supremo had convened the meeting at Constitution Club here to deliberate and arrive at a consensus opposition candidate for the Presidential election.

Leaders of 17 parties attended the meeting, but some parties like the TRS, AIMIM, AAP, SAD and BJD were not present.

India reports 8,822 fresh COVID-19 cases, 15 deaths

New Delhi, Jun 15 (PTI) With 8,822?fresh coronavirus infections being reported in a day, India's tally of COVID-19 cases rose to 4,32,45,517?on Wednesday, while the count of active cases increased to 53,637, according to Union Health Ministry data

The death toll due to the disease has climbed to 5,24,792 with 15 fatalities being reported in a span of 24 hours, the data updated at 8 am stated

The count of active cases now comprises 0.12 per cent of the total infections, while the national COVID-19 recovery rate was recorded at 98.66 per cent, the health ministry said

An increase of 3,089?cases has been recorded in the active COVID-19 caseload in a span of 24 hours, the data showed

The daily positivity rate was recorded at two per cent and the weekly positivity rate at 2.35 per cent, according to the ministry

The number of people who have recuperated from the disease has surged to 4,26,67,088, while the case fatality rate was recorded at?1.21 per cent, as per the data

According to the ministry, 195.5 crore vaccine doses have been administered in the country so far under the nationwide COVID-19 vaccination drive

Sharad Pawar not in Presidential race: NCP

Mumbai :(PTI) NCP chief Sharad Pawar is not keen on contesting the Presidential election, according to a senior party leader, even as some opposition parties have backed his candidature for the race to the Rashtrapati Bhavan.

The issue came up for discussion after Pawar met Maharashtra NCP ministers here on Monday.

An NCP minister, who attended the meeting, said Aam Aadmi Party leader Sanjay Singh met Pawar on Sunday and affirmed his party's support to the NCP chief for the election for the next President of India, to be held on July 18.

Last week, when senior Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge was in Mumbai in connection with the Rajya Sabha polls, he pitched for Pawar's name as the opposition's joint candidate for the presidential polls.

Kharge said the Congress had even consulted the Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress (TMC) over Pawar's candidature.

"But, I don't think he is keen on it (contesting polls). Saheb (Pawar) is a people's man who loves meeting people. He will not restrict himself to the Rashtrapati Bhavan," the minister from the NCP said.

More importantly, Pawar is busy trying to bring the opposition together ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, he said.

The Congress has been reaching out to other opposition parties for a common candidate for the presidential polls.

The BJP-led NDA is comfortably placed to win the presidential election, with its vote share touching the 50 per cent mark of the total electors.

While there are 776 MPs of both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha, each having 700 votes, there are 4,033 legislators in states with different votes who will also elect President Ram Nath Kovind's successor.

Though the final list of electors is yet to be notified, the NDA has 440 MPs in its favour while the opposition UPA has around 180 MPs, besides 36 MPs of the TMC who normally support the opposition candidate.

The election for the President will be held on July 18 which will see voting by members of both the Houses of Parliament and state Assemblies.

Rahul questioned by ED: Cong leaders detained as protests continue for second day

New Delhi : (PTI) Several Congress leaders, including K C Venugopal and Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, were detained for violating prohibitory orders outside the heavily barricaded party headquarters on Tuesday, day two of Rahul Gandhi being questioned by the ED.

Ahead of his second day of questioning, the former Congress chief joined senior party leaders at a 'dharna' at the Congress headquarters. Several Congress leaders were detained by Delhi Police and taken away to different police stations.

Among those detained were Gaurav Gogoi, Deepender Singh Hooda, Ranjeet Ranjan, Manickam Tagore and Imran Pratapgarhi.

This is the second day of the Congress' protests against the questioning of Rahul Gandhi by the ED in a money laundering case related to the National Herald newspaper.

Gandhi was questioned for over 10 hours on Monday.

The Congress has said it will not be cowed down by intimidatory tactics of arrests or "false" cases against its top leaders.

Prophet row: 337 booked in 13 FIRs registered for violence in UP

Lucknow: The Uttar Pradesh Police has so far arrested 337 people from eight districts in connection with the violence that erupted following the Friday prayers on June 10 over a controversial remark against Prophet Mohammad, an official said on Tuesday.

Thirteen FIRs have also been registered in nine districts in this connection, Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order) Prashant Kumar said in a statement.

Of the 337 people arrested, 92 are from Prayagraj, 83 from Saharanpur, 52 from Hathras, 41 from Ambedkar Nagar, 40 from Moradabad, and 18 from Firozabad, six from Aligarh and five from Jalaun, Kumar said giving in a district-wise breakup.

Of the 13 cases, three were registered each in Prayagraj and Saharanpur, and one each in Firozabad, Ambedkar Nagar, Moradabad, Hathras, Aligarh, Lakhimpur Kheri and Jalaun, the officer said.

In Prayagraj, a mob had set a few motorcycles and carts on fire and also attempted to set ablaze a police vehicle in protest against the controversial remark on Prophet Mohammad by the now-suspended BJP leader Nupur Sharma. A policeman was also injured in the chaos. Police had used tear gas and lathis to disperse the protesters.

In Saharanpur, protesters shouted slogans against Sharma and demanded a death sentence for her.

There were protests in Bijnor, Moradabad, Rampur and Lucknow as well.

Condemning the June 10 violence in parts of the country over the controversial remarks against Prophet Mohammad by BJP members, who were later suspended by the party, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Monday wondered why was an issue being created over the matter, given the fact that the saffron camp has already taken action against the two leaders.

Expressing displeasure over the attack on his cabinet colleague Nitin Nabin by miscreants in neighbouring Jharkhand amid the protests, Kumar on Monday asserted that "the responsibility of maintaining peace and communal harmony rests with the state government".

He was responding to queries over BJP's allegations that the attack was a “premeditated one”.

"Immediately after the attack on my young cabinet colleague, I instructed the chief secretary and the director general of police (DGP) to enquire about the whole incident. They are still in touch with senior officials of the Jharkhand government and taking updates pertaining to the case," said Kumar after winding up his public interaction programme 'Janata Ke Darbaar Mein Mukhyamantri'.

BJP leader and Bihar road construction minister Nitin Nabin had a narrow escape on June 10 in Jharkhand capital as his vehicle came under attack near Hanuman temple on Ranchi's Main Road while he was returning from a family function.

Nabin's SUV was vandalized during protests over the remarks made by suspended BJP leaders Nupur Sharma and Naveen Jindal.

"The responsibility of maintaining peace and communal harmony rests with the state government. The police had no control over the mob (in Jharkhand)," the supremo of the JD(U), which is an ally of the BJP in the state's ruling coalition, stated.

Talking about the violent agitation, Kumar said, "The party has already taken action against them, why is the issue being used as a tool to create chaos in the society? There are certain people who believe in creating communal disharmony in the society...They wait for such moments."

The CM maintained that officials concerned, on his instructions, had taken appropriate steps in his state to ensure the "situation does not get out of control".

SC issues notice to CBI, ED on bail plea of actor in Ponzi schemes cases

New Delhi, (PTI) The Supreme Court Monday sought responses from CBI and the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on a plea of actor Mohd Naseer seeking bail in connection with criminal cases related to alleged cheating and siphoning of funds in the names of Ponzi schemes.

Naseer, a visually impaired actor who had acted in the 2009 Bollywood Hindi movie -- 'The Shadow, the Dark Side of Truth', is in jail from 2019 in connection with the cases lodged by CBI and the ED.

A vacation bench comprising justices A S Bopanna and Vikram Nath sought replies of the probe agencies within three weeks after senior advocate Siddharth Bhatnagar, appearing for the jailed actor, said the Orissa High Court, which reserved the order on the bail plea on June 12, 2020, was yet to deliver it.

The actor was arrested on July 20, 2009, and was granted bail on the same day.

However, after filing of the charge sheet by the CBI, which was entrusted with the probe by the high court in 2012, the actor was taken into custody in 2019 and since then he is in jail.

The order on the bail application is awaited in the high court, his lawyer said.

Delhi Police removes Congress workers protesting near ED office

To close the road completely that led to ED office, the police had placed several barricades. Later, the Congress workers sat in front of the barricades and raised slogans in favour of their leader and against the present dispensation at the Centre.

delhi : As Congress leader Rahul Gandhi was questioned by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in connection with the National Herald case and Congress workers protested outside the agency, Delhi Police had to use mild force to remove protesting workers.

The Delhi Police did not allow the party workers who were accompanied by senior leaders to move towards the agency and were stopped at least 1 km before the ED office.

However, the police could be seen picking up the Congress workers who were sitting in front of the barricades and bundled them in their vehicle.

As a part of precaution, several Congress workers were detained.

Talking about the same, Congress spokesperson Ragini Nayak who was also there at the site, expressed strong resentment against the government.

“This is completely unconstitutional. The Congress workers cannot even gather outside their own office. You are detaining people for a peaceful march. You have turned the whole area into a fortress,” she said.

The spokesperson alleged that this tactic is just to muzzle the voice of Rahul Gandhi, who is the sole critic of the Central government for all its failure.

Goal of USD 5 trillion GDP appears to be case of 'shifting goalposts': Chidambaram

Speaking at the finance ministry's iconic week celebrations of 'Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav', Nageswaran had said last week that IMF has forecast the Indian economy to cross USD 5 trillion by 2026-27. India's Gross domestic product (GDP) in dollar terms has already crossed USD 3 trillion.

Reacting to the remarks, Chidambaram said the "goal of a USD 5 trillion GDP appears to be a case of 'shifting goalposts'".

The original target year was 2023-24, the former finance minister said, adding that, "We are nowhere near that goalpost."

"Now, the Chief Economic Adviser has said we will achieve the goal 'by 2027'," he said.

"I think each one of the key players has a different goalpost: PM, FM, FS and CEA. Whenever the Economy reaches the milestone, one can say 'We told you so'!" Chidambaram said.

Ranchi : (AGENCY)Two people died during the violent protest that erupted in Ranchi after Friday prayers against the controversial remarks on Prophet Muhammad made by suspended Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) spokesperson Nupur Sharma and expelled leader Naveen Jindal.

“Two people have succumbed to their injuries out of total injured who were brought to Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) after the violence in Ranchi,” confirmed RIMS authorities.

The protest that erupted after Friday prayers had turned violent following the incidents of stone-pelting and torching of several vehicles and vandalisation was reported. Many people sustained injuries in the violent protests yesterday.

The district administration acted immediately and imposed a curfew in violence-hit areas of Ranchi thereby bringing the situation under control. All internet services were temporarily suspended in Ranchi till 6 am on Saturday i.e June 11, in wake of protests in the city.

Deputy Inspector General of Ranchi Police (DIG) Anish Gupta had said that the situation was “under control” despite being a “little tense”.

After various gulf nations expressed outrage against the controversial remarks against the Prophet, the country has been witnessing protests in various states including Punjab, Delhi, and Uttar Pradesh.

In Punjab, the protestors have demanded the arrest of sacked leaders, whereas the instances of stone-pelting and sloganeering were witnessed after the Friday prayers in Uttar Pradesh.

As per the reports, a massive protest broke out at Delhi’s Jama Masjid which was later brought under control after the police removed protestors from the protest site.

Notably, a controversy erupted after Nupur Sharma’s remarks against the minorities. Some Gulf countries have also lodged their protest.

However, India on Thursday reiterated that the controversial remarks concerning Prophet Mohammad do not reflect the views of the Government and added that action has been taken by concerned quarters against those who made the comment.

Delhi Police had registered two FIRs on Wednesday– one against former BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma and the other against 31 people, including All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) chief Asaduddin Owaisi and controversial priest Yati Narsinghanand – for allegedly spreading hate and hurting religious sentiments, officials said on Thursday.

Pune, Jun 11 (PTI) After the BJP won three out of six Rajya Sabha seats in Maharashtra, NCP chief Sharad Pawar on Saturday said he was not shocked to see the results, and added that his party received one extra vote that came from an independent legislator, who was tilted towards the opposite side.

BJP candidates - Union minister Piyush Goyal and former state minister Anil Bonde, and Dhananjay Mahadik - won the fiercely contested election conducted on Friday. Shiv Sena's Sanjay Raut, NCP's Praful Patel and Congress' Imran Pratapgarhi also came out victorious. Sena's second candidate Sanjay Pawar lost to BJP's Mahadik.

"I am not shocked to see the results. If you see the votes polled by every candidate of (Maha Vikas Aghadi allies) NCP, Shiv Sena and Congress, they received the votes as per the quota. Only Praful Patel (of NCP) received one extra vote and I know from where it came. That was not MVA's vote, it was from the opposite side," Pawar told reporters here.

He added that for the sixth seat, contested by Shiv Sena, there was a big gap, but MVA showed courage and put in efforts. BJP had more Independent MLAs on their side, but for both, BJP and MVA, the number of votes were not sufficient," he said.

The MVA made a courageous attempt to win the sixth seat despite falling short of a few numbers, but one has to accept the miracle, in which BJP leader Devendra Fadnavis succeeded in weaning away independents and smaller parties who would have supported the MVA, Pawar added.

"That is why this gap of votes was there," he said.

He said the quota for first preference vote for Patel (NCP), Pratapgarhi (Congress) and Raut (shiv sena) was intact.

"In fact, Praful Patel, received one extra vote from a BJP-backed independent MLA, who voted for Patel after informing me about it. The independent legislator has worked with me earlier," Pawar said.

The NCP chief said there was no threat to the Uddhav Thackeray-led MVA government in the state.

"The sixth seat was a risk for the MVA, but Uddhav Thackeray took the risk. In politics, one has to take risks," he said.

Nothing to hide from ED: Cong on summons to Sonia, Rahul

New Delhi :(PTI) The Congress on Wednesday said its leaders Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi will appear before the ED as they have nothing to hide from the probe agency, and that the BJP should learn lessons from it.

Sonia Gandhi was asked to appear before the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Wednesday in connection with a money laundering case pertaining to the National Herald-AJL deal, but she had sought time from the agency as she is recovering from coronavirus.

The Congress president, who tested positive on Thursday, is yet to recover and her latest report is not Covid-negative.

Rahul Gandhi has been asked to appear before the ED on June 13 and he is likely to appear before it. He was earlier summoned on June 2 but had sought time as he was abroad at the time.

Congress spokesperson Pawan Khera told reporters, "We are a law-abiding party.We follow rules. So, if they have been summoned, of course, they we will go. We have nothing to hide".

"We are not like them. We remember when Mr Amit Shah was running around in 2002 to 2013," he said.

"They will learn some lessons from us on what kind of people who adhere to the path of truth are. They should learn from us," Khera said.

The Congress is likely to make it a big event on Monday when Rahul Gandhi appears before the probe agency's headquarters in central Delhi.

The case pertains to the probe into the alleged financial irregularities in the party-promoted Young Indian that owns the National Herald newspaper. The paper is published by Associated Journals Limited (AJL) and owned by Young Indian Pvt Limited.

Officials said the agency wants to record the statements of Rahul and Sonia Gandhi under criminal sections of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).
