WEST BENGAL POLITICS: Kolkata. The body of Ashish Banerjee, five-time MLA from Rampurhat in Birbhum district and a former minister in the Mamata Banerjee government, was found hanging from a noose in the party office near his residence on Sunday morning. Banerjee, 75, who represented Rampurhat from 2001 to 2026, lost the recent assembly elections to BJP candidate Dhruv Saha.

Police found a one-page suicide note near the body, which has caused a stir in the state's political circles. In his final message, the former deputy speaker wrote, "No one is responsible for my death. But today I realize that entering politics was the biggest mistake of my life." Ashish, a teacher by profession, cited his clean career in the note, writing that he never took a single penny illegally throughout his life and always taught students without fees.
He was never involved in corruption.
Referring to his sidelining within the Tarapith Rampurhat Development Authority (TRDA) and conspiracies to tarnish his image, he wrote that he had never been involved in any corruption, yet he was still humiliated. Expressing his grief and frustration, he advised future generations of his family never to enter politics.
This incident has raised many unanswered questions amid the tightening grip on Trinamool leaders and their political isolation following the recent change of power. Rampurhat police have stated that they will conduct a forensic examination of the suicide note.
Five-time MLA from Rampurhat
Ashish Banerjee was a longtime active member of Bengal politics. He was elected five times as MLA from the Rampurhat constituency in Birbhum. He also served as the Deputy Speaker of the Assembly during Mamata Banerjee's tenure as Chief Minister. Furthermore, he served as Minister of Education and Agriculture after Mamata Banerjee's first term in power. He lost the recent assembly elections to Dhruv Saha of the BJP. News of his sudden demise has sent shockwaves through political circles. Leaders from various parties, including the Trinamool Congress, have expressed deep grief over his passing.
