Dhamtari's 'great transformation': Record procurement worth Rs 60 crore and a new 30,000 metric tonne logistics hub

Now the farmer will not wander, the fate of Dhamtari will change with broad gauge rail and modern warehouses.

Rice bowl to become 'warehousing hub': Dhamtari's new economic takeoff

Raipur, June 06, 2026/

Dhamtari, the agriculturally dominant district of Chhattisgarh, is today entering a new phase of development and self-reliance. This district, which once faced a shortage of storage space after record Rabi crop production, is today emerging as a major warehousing and agricultural logistics hub of the state due to its strong will and administrative foresight.
With the joint efforts of the National Cooperative Consumer Federation (NCCF) and the Chhattisgarh State Warehousing Corporation (SWC), an additional scientific storage capacity of 30 thousand metric tonnes is being developed in the district, which is set to completely transform the rural economy and agricultural landscape of Dhamtari.

Lessons learned from past challenges

In recent years, Dhamtari witnessed record production and procurement of Rabi crops, especially chickpeas. However, this joy also brought a significant challenge: the district lacked adequate storage capacity. Produce was forced to be shipped to warehouses in other districts, which not only increased transportation costs but also placed significant pressure on administrative and cooperative institutions.
Turning this challenge into an opportunity, the Dhamtari administration initiated a comprehensive action plan to develop sustainable and modern storage infrastructure within the district.

Support for the 'world's largest grain storage scheme'

The central government's ambitious "World's Largest Grain Storage Scheme" is proving to be a boon for Dhamtari. Four Primary Agricultural Credit Cooperative Societies (PACS) in the district have been selected under this initiative, including Anwari, Kosmarra, Potiyadih-Amdi, and Koliari. Construction of modern warehouses with a capacity of 2,500 metric tons each is underway at a rapid pace. Once completed, these will provide an additional 10,000 metric tons of storage at the village level, eliminating the need for local farmers to travel far to store their produce.
Additionally, the State Warehousing Corporation (SWC) is developing two large warehouses with a capacity of 10,000 metric tons each in Dhamtari and Kurud. With the Central Warehousing Corporation (CWC) already having a capacity of over 100,000 metric tons, Dhamtari's network is set to be significantly strengthened.

Record procurement and economic prosperity (Rabi Marketing Year 2026)

This expansion in storage capacity is not being done in the air, but in recognition of the growing agricultural prosperity on the ground. In the Rabi marketing year 2026, a record purchase of 1,16,162 quintals of gram has been made from 9,103 farmers of the district, for which the process of paying Rs 60.54 crore directly into the farmers' accounts is underway. Along with gram, mustard and lentils have also been successfully procured.

Rice millers and trade will get a new momentum

Dhamtari has always been a leader in rice milling, but the safe storage of finished rice and paddy has often been a challenge. This new capacity expansion will accelerate milling activities, alleviate storage pressure, and significantly reduce transportation and logistics costs. Furthermore, the imminent commencement of rake operations on the broad-gauge rail line in Dhamtari will further the district's development. The rail connection will enable rice and agricultural produce to reach major markets across the country at a significantly lower cost.
The warehousing infrastructure being developed in Dhamtari and the soon-to-be-launched broad-gauge rail service will establish the district as a major logistics and trade hub in the state. This initiative will prove to be a milestone in job creation, business expansion, and boosting the local economy. The increased storage capacity will lead to better management of agricultural produce, reduced transportation costs, and improved marketing. This new infrastructure will strengthen the rural economy, ensuring long-term benefits for farmers, cooperatives, traders, and industries.
