Why are tomatoes still showing signs of being in season? The main reason behind the price hike has been revealed.
Shahdol: Amidst the severe cold in Madhya Pradesh, the demand for green vegetables increases. This season is also considered a special one for tomatoes. Due to the high supply and demand, tomatoes often experience shortages during this time. However, contrary to this, tomato prices are rising, which is also ruining the taste of people's kitchens. Find out why tomatoes are so expensive despite being in season.
Tomatoes are hot in the cold season
The Shahdol division, along with the entire state of Madhya Pradesh, is experiencing severe cold. Temperatures have hovered around 5 degrees Celsius or below since the beginning of December. This is affecting vegetables and crops. It's tomato harvest season, yet tomato prices are skyrocketing these days. Roshni Sharma, a tomato buyer, says, "Tomatoes used to be cheap in December, but this year they're selling for anywhere from ₹50 to ₹70 per kg."
Tomatoes are being sold for Rs 60-70 per kg.
These days, tomato prices are rising significantly in Shahdol district, with daily price increases. Vegetable trader Rampratap Sahu explains, "Currently, tomatoes are being sold at open prices ranging from ₹50 per kg to ₹60-70 per kg, depending on the quality. There are several reasons for this."
Why are tomato prices increasing?
Vegetable trader Rampratap Sahu explains, "This year, it rained for a long time, which ruined the initial crop. Then, when farmers planted new crops, it became extremely cold. Temperatures are dropping to 3 degrees, which is why tomatoes aren't ripening properly, and this is why local tomatoes aren't reaching the market. This is why tomato prices are rising." Vegetable trader Rampratap Sahu explains that if the cold continues like this, tomato prices won't decrease any time soon.
