00 Successful treatment of mediastinal germ cell tumor of a 29-year-old youth
Raipur. The Cancer Surgery Department of Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar Smriti Chikitsalaya, Raipur, affiliated to Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru Smriti Medical College, has achieved another remarkable achievement in the medical field. The team of the Cancer Surgery Department once again saved the life of a 29-year-old male patient by successfully operating on a rare and complex cancer of the chest; mediastinal germ cell tumor. The patient had reached the hospital with complaints of a lump in the chest, difficulty in breathing and constant pain.
Dr. Ashutosh Gupta, Head of the Department of Cancer Surgery, provided detailed information about the case, stating that the patient had previously been undergoing treatment at the Cancer Department of AIIMS Raipur, where a biopsy confirmed a mediastinal germ cell tumor. Initial examination revealed a lump in the center of the chest, approximately 13 by 18 by 16 centimeters, and was adherent to large blood vessels near the heart. Given the high risk, AIIMS Raipur doctors decided to administer chemotherapy first.
The patient received six cycles of chemotherapy from January 2025 to June 2025, which reduced the size of the tumor to 4 x 3 x 4 centimeters. The patient was then referred from AIIMS Raipur to Dr. Ashutosh Gupta, Head of the Department of Cancer Surgery at Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar Memorial Hospital.
Dr. Gupta decided on surgery after thoroughly examining all the test reports. Given the sensitive nature of the tumor, the Head of the Cardiac Surgery Department was consulted, and surgical fitness was obtained from the Anesthesiology Department. The complex surgery, which lasted approximately 3 to 4 hours, involved the removal of the tumor along with a portion of the left lung with utmost skill.
The surgery was a complete success, and the patient was discharged from the hospital in a healthy state after a few days of treatment. Following treatment, the patient has been returning to the hospital for follow-up visits periodically. Dr. Ashutosh Gupta, Dr. K.K. Sahu, Dr. Kishan Soni, Dr. Gunjan Agarwal, Dr. Sushrut Agarwal, Dr. Samridh, Dr. Lavanya, Dr. Sonam, and Dr. Anil played a key role in this complex operation.
Mediastinal germ cell tumor is a rare cancer originating from germ cells in the middle of the chest, typically found in men between the ages of 20 and 40. Its main symptoms include cough, shortness of breath, and chest pain. This cancer is treated with chemotherapy and surgery, in which a surgical oncologist and radiation oncologist work together. If this cancer is detected early and treated appropriately, the five-year survival rate is over 90 percent.
