Indian Railways takes another step towards green mobility with solar-assisted passenger coaches

Raipur/Bilaspur. Taking another step towards green railway operations, Indian Railways has developed a solar-assisted passenger coach in the Prayagraj Division of North Central Railway. This initiative demonstrates the integration of renewable energy technology with conventional railway coaching stock to increase energy efficiency.
What is the traditional method of power generation?
Traditionally, electrical power in ICF passenger coaches is generated through an axle-driven alternator installed underneath the coach. This alternator, driven mechanically through a belt system connected to the coach's axle, charges the coach's battery bank and supplies power to passenger amenities such as lighting, fans, and mobile charging. This system has been working effectively for Indian Railways for decades, although it depends on train speed and incurs energy losses during mechanical and electrical conversion.
How will the solar coach work?
The solar-assisted coach further improves this system. High-efficiency solar photovoltaic panels installed on the coach's roof generate electricity directly from sunlight and contribute additionally to charging the coach's battery bank. By harnessing solar energy available throughout the day, this system reduces dependence on conventional axle-driven power generation and helps in efficient energy utilization.
The pilot coach is fitted with a rooftop solar system of approximately 7 kW-peak capacity, which will generate clean energy to meet the coach's power requirements. Apart from contributing to energy conservation, this system will reduce the load on conventional charging systems and increase the reliability of onboard power services.
